NOLA JONES reports to the convention on behalf ACTION “Lef’s gef ready” By JACK MacKENZIE Rocio Ist Vice-President NCE more the Regional Convention of the IWA has re-affirmed its political action policy. Our Union was largely instru- mental in the foundation of the New Demo- cratic Party and continues to be one of its main supporting pillars. . The Officers’ Report Committee emphatic- ally endorsed that section of the Regional Officers’ report which out- lined the political activities in which the Union had en- gaged. Many of the resolutions submitted by the Local Un- ions, and approved, require the continuation of such political activity. Of the greatest importance was the convention’s decision to re- sist further Social Credit anti-union legislation reported to be under consideration in political circles. Only the New Democratic Party may be relied upon to fight for labour’s right to strike and the right to negotiate the union shop. IWA delegates carried this resolve a step further at the Annual Convention of the B.C. Federation of Labour. They enthusiastically supported various challenges to infringements upon labour’s rights imposed by the provin- cial government. WEN CA Taare 4 As never before, organized labour must gain the opportunity to state its case on the floor of the Legislature. The New Demo- cratic Party provides just such an oppor- tunity with direct emphasis. Other political parties have epoken in pious terms about the problems of advancing automation and mechanization. But, they have done little to counter technological un- employment. Organized labour has shaped the practical plans of the New Democratic Party to en- sure that the increased productive capacity resulting from automation shall not menace job security for the workers. With so much at stake in the progress of the New Democratic Party, it is the part of wisdom to give greater reality to our support. The plan to which our Union originally agreed provided for Local Union affiliation in ways that are possible despite the Social Credit restrictions written into the Labour Relations Act. The one vital reason for this affiliation is that Local Unions may exercise their full influence in the nomination of suitable candi- dates for election and in the making of policy as it affects labour’s interests. George Home, CLC Political Education Director reminded us during his recent visit that a Federal election is in prospect next Spring. Let’s get ready to promote IWA in- terests in the political field. ee ea RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE R. Pickering, D. E. Pratt, M. J. Corbeil, R. Troutman, F. Canning, G. Stockton, K. Johnson, T.
