Immersion Expansion (CONTINUED) CAMPBELL RIVER The French Immersion Program is moving to Cedar Elementary School. CHILLIWACK The school board has approved a Late Immersion program to begin in Sep- tember 1982 if enrolment warrants. RICHMOND In September 1981 the Early French Immersion Program will be located in four schools. Ecole Cook—K-4 and Programme Cadre Ecole Whiteside—K-3 Ecole Gilmore—K-3 Ecole Dixon—K-2 Richmond Parents for French are strongly committed to assisting in the expansion and maintaining the quality of education that our children have received to date in the program. Four of our local members have volunteered to be CPF represen- tatives at each of our immersion schools. It is hoped that each of these four members can distribute in- formation about CPF, encourage new memberships and keep our chapter informed about the activities and concerns evolving at each school. The principal of Ecole Cook Mr. A Burt will become the bilingual co- ordinating principal for the four dual- track schools. D. Rosenburg NEW WESTMINSTER The district will plan to have French Immersion Kindergarten and grade 1 in September 1982. VANCOUVER In September 1981, two Late Immer- sion Grade 6 classes will start at General Gordon Elementary school. Laurier Annex and Van Horn Elemen- tary schools will open their first im- mersion kindergartens and Queen Elizabeth Annex is to start a second kindergarten. COWICHAN VALLEY School boundary changes are being discussed so the locations of two classes each of grades K, 1 and 2 and 1 class of grade 3 immersion has to be announced. The Cowichan Valley Parents for French wrote to the School Board asking that certain issues be considered when decisions were made regarding classroom space for the immersion students. VICTORIA Margaret Jenkins elementary school has full registration for a new 1981 immersion K and Lansdowne Junior Secondary School will open one class of grade 6 Late Immersion. Policies Published Long - anticipated Ministry of Education policies for the Program- me-Cadre de Francais and Early and Late French Immersion have now been distributed to all B.C. Superin- tendents of Schools. Effective Sept- ember, 1981, the 15 page document outlines conditions for the implemen- tation and administration of these programs. The preamble states, “It is the policy of the provincial government to make it possible for parents to have a choice of either official language (of Canada) as the language of instruc- tion for their children.” The Schools Department Circular goes on to detail the province’s third policy for the Programme Cadre (the previous two were issued in June/78
