ey deer’, t December 6th, 1976 Moved by Alderman Laking: Seconded by Alderman Traboulay: That a letter be sent to Premier William Bennett explaining to him in detail the difficulties that will be created for municipalities and taxpayers by the proposed increase of the basic mill rate for school taxes from 32.5 to 37.5 mills. Carried. Alderman Traboulay expressed concern that municipalities would be eriticized for increasing local taxes, when the Provincial Government was actually responsible, and he suggested that welfare and education costs should be removed from homeowners’ taxes. Alderman Traboulay drew attention to the fact that as no candidates came forth this year for the position of School Trustee in the District of Coquitlam, Mr. George Kerster, local M.L.A., had appointed Mrs. B.A. LeFrancois of Port Coquitlam, and he stated he felt she would make an excellent Trustee for School District No. 43 (Coquitlam). Alderman Keryluk noted that the 1977 Provisional Budget of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, in the amount of 7.5 million dollars (an increase of 7.2%) has been approved. Alderman Keryluk referred to the request by the Leigh Square Medical Centre for By+law regulations to be waived in order to proceed with the building of a second storey on the existing structure, and he inquired whether this project would commence, and if so, what its effect would be onthe downtown area in view of the fact that present single storey building does not meet the Zoning By-law requirements. Alderman Thompson advised that the project has already been approved; however, Alderman Laking pointed out that the building permits have yet to be obtained and parking requirements must be met. Mayor Campbell then spoke of his intention to run for the Chairmanship of the Greater Vancouver Regional District in 1977, and he expressed his appreciation to all members of Council for their support of his candidacy.
