Kermode boys finish third in Prince George tourney A two-win, one-loss effort gave Terrace Caledonia senior boys a third-place finish at the eight-team Prince George Polars Classic basketball tournament on the weekend. Kermodes opened with a 61- 57 victory over the hometown College Heights squad. Geoff McKay contributed 24 points to the win while Richard Newhouse had 17, Kermode girls third of three in zone Kitimat Orcas emerged as the best team on the December 14 weekend as Terrace Caledonia Kermode girls hosted zone play action in basketball. The mini-tourney was shorten- ed by the failure of Smithers to show up. The Smithers team ap- parently has folded for the season. That left Kermades, Orcas and Prince Rupert Rainbirds to play a shorter series. It had been planned to have Kitimat vs. Terrace in a Friday night opener, but a power outage midway through the contest forced cancellation of that game. So, they played three Satur- day games and the r¢sults clearly showed that Kitimat had taken over the throne from Prince Rupert. Saturday’s action started with Rainbirds downing Kermodes 46- 34, despite a virtual tic at halftime. Orcas then faced Rainbirds and counted a 60-36 win for the Kiti- In game two they ran into - Pettigrew Lions of Dawson Creek. It was a semi-final contest that saw Kermodes lose 81- 69, McKay had 20 to pace the Cal boys. _ In their third game for third place, Kermodes downed Prince George Duchess Park 74-60. Fernando Milhomens was the big gun with a 24-point effort. McKay added 19, Both McKay and Newhouse picked up all-star berths - McKay mat girls. The final contest saw on the first team and Newhouse on Kitimat defeat Kermodes 59-27, the second squad. Luge group seeks greenhorn siedders for Winter Games The B.C, Luge Association has now arrived in the Northwest. Zone 7, which includes the region- al districts of Bulkley-Nechako - and Kitimat-Stikine, is preparing to hold the zone playdowns for the 1992 B.C. games. The zone play- down will include a two-day clin- ic, playoffs for team selection, and an afternoon of fun races. The sport of Luge is new to our area, SO no experience is neces- sary. Organizers are looking for people 13 years or older to come out and try this sport, The playoff will create a team of eight people, which consists of the following: Juniors — 13 to 19 years as of Feb. 27, 1991 —-two junior women, two junior men. Seniors — over 19 years as of Feb. 27, 1992 — two senior women, two senior men, Shames Mountain has assisted the group by allowing them to hold the clinic and playoffs on the ski hill, The following is a list of _ important dates and times: Jan. 10, 7 p.m., Northwest Community College in the Student Body office: information meeting _and introduction. Well, as you know, this takes practice with some skill. But, more often than not, it will also require a new aggressive attitude. Commit yourself to rolling the skis onto the edges in your turns. Show everyone below you the Try steps one to three to help regulate your new-found edging skills: Number One is very little edging with some slippage sideways; Two is moderate, and Three is maximum. Use this scale to rate your edging with cach turn to help you become more sensitive to this skill. Remember to edge smoothly, not abruptly. The key to |_ skiing is to remain smooth and fluid.
