Pintos and Bobcats recalled

WASHINGTON (AP) —
Ford Motor Co.'s planned
safety corrections ‘failed
badly” in U,S. government
crash tests after the com-
pany agreed to recall .5
million Pintos and 30,000
Nercury Bobcats, the federal
safety agency Says.

Consumer advocate Ralph
Nader told of the failure
Monday and the Naional
Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA)
later confirmed it.

NHTSA spokesman Hal
Parris said that after the
failure of the planned
corrections the agency
forced Ford to go further
with its modifications. The
latest corrections appear to
have remedied the problem
of fires when the cars are hit
from the rear.

Ford spokesman Chuck
Gumushian said he could not
say whether the additional
corrections, if: gicen final
geernment approval, will
delay the recall program.
Ford annunced the recall
June 9, saying free

modifications would begin in
September. .

The Ford spokesman also
said he does not know
whether t e additional
corrections would make the
recall more expensive than
the company earlier esti-
mated, ‘The company had
said the cest would be $20 to
$38 a car, or a otal of abaut
$40 million if ali owners
bring in their cars.

California jury awarded a
severely burned teen-ager
$128.5 million in damages
because of a fiery explosion
of a Pinto gasoline tank when
the car was hit from the
rear. AMOUNT

$6.6 million. .

When Ford announced the
recall, under pressure from
NHTSA, the company said it
would reilace the fuel-filler
pipe and seal with a longer
pipe and improved seal, and
install a new polyethslene

shield across the front of the
fuel tank.

But when the cars were
tested by NHTSA, the fuel
tank still leaked gasoline ina
collision. This was the cn-

_ dition that led to the problem

of fires NHTSA cited.

In the latest test, con-
ducted Friday, Parris said
Ford added a second shield
and improved the device that
holds the tank.
