Breshnev’s “quiet, meek

Ali says

MOSCOW (AP) — After a
35-minute meeting with
ULS.S.R. President Leonid
Brezhnev today, Muham-
mad Ali said he found the
Soviet leader '‘a quiet and
meek gentleman” dedicated
to world peace.

Ali told reporters
Brezhnev asked him to act as
“an unofficial ambassador
for peace to the United
States. ‘

"All he talked about was
peace and love for
humanity,” said All, who
looked like an ambassador in
his black pinstriped- suit.
“He is nothing like the
pictures that have been
tainted to me about him.

“Thig ig the biggest honor
I’ve ever had in my life,’
said the former heavyweight

boxing champion, almost

speechless at his meeting
with the 7l-year-old Soviet

leader.
It was believed to be the
first time Brezhnev hag.met

“Unfortunately the
weather is lousy and we're
sick and tired of the rain,”
Brezhnev said in Russian,
referring to the gray skies
over Moscow.

Ali and his wife to sit down.
Then the reporters and
photographers were ushered
out of the room and the three
were left with an interpreter
and Sergei Pavlov, chair-
man of the Soviet Physical
Culture and Sports Com-
mittee.

Ali arrived in the Soviet
capital last Monday and has
been travelling in Soviet
Central Asia, praying in
Moslem mosques and
meeting local Moslems.
