10 cents’ worth of salt pork to
be used for pork and beans for
Saturday’s supper. Eggs for
breakfast on Saturday mornius
only.

The lunches? Well,
they are not too bad for the
little woman who has to stay
home all day to work out her
budget problems, or for the chil-
dren who are lucky enough to
be able to come home to lunch,
but here again, what about
lunch box lunches?

I wonder if Edith Adams has
ever taken a peek into the lunch
box of a bucker or a faller, or
any other worker for that matter.
I am afraid that the one and a
half loaves of bread a day would
not begin to cover the lunch
box problem of many housewives.

Naturally, such things as steaks,
pork chops, chicken and the bet-
ter cuts of meat do not find
a place on the $15 menu. Are
these items of food too good
for working class families, old
age pensioners, and others in the
lower income brackets?

And hasn’t Edith Adams heard
that throughout B.C. there are
all kinds of people, many of them
ex-service men and women, work-
ing desperately hard to eke out
an existence by raising chickens?
Doesn’t it help them when we
can include more of their pro-
ducts in our. diet?

Of course we are paying too
much for steaks, pork chops, and
most Other things too, but Ca-
nadian housewives are not
asleep. We have no intention of

housewives’ delegation which re-
cently journey to Ottawa to in-
terview the government are the
demands of working people every-
/'where, demands that the govern-
ment can be forced to meet.

planning picnic

The Annual Father’s Day Picnic
sponsored by the Children’s Jubi-
lee Summer Camp, Orlomah
Beach, will be held Sunday, June
15. The boat leaves Harbor Navi-
gation Wharf, foot of Gore Ave.,
at 10 am., and returns in. the
early evening. Return fare is one
dollar and meals are provided at
a nominal charge. 3

pleasant day’s outing at the camp
on the North Arm of Burrard

HAVE YOU ever had the feeling that you just didn’t
have enough energy to get up from the dinner table and start
in on the stack of dirty dishes? Yes, I know, it’s quite com-

mon. You have likely done a

long and you're just all tuckered out.

that one of the reasons for your
fatigue is that you have been
standing all the time.

Naturally, you say, how else
can I do my work? But, say the
experts, standing takes 14 per-
cent more energy than sitting and
you can lessen fatigue by about
65 percent if you sit at your work.
They advise that sitting is con-
venient for lengthy jobs located
in one place—ironing, polishing
silver, peeling potatoes and pack-
ing lunches.

Household management special-
ists believe that women stand at
most household tasks because so
many kitchens and laundries are
not arranged for convenient sit-
ting. We might add that poor
housing generally is the reason
most housewives are always on
their feet.

The majority of homes do not
have a laundry-on the main floor
but have the wash tubs in the
basement. It is bad enough hav-
ing to run up and down a flight
of stairs loaded with wet clothes,
but for those who live on the
third floor of some old rooming
house it really runs into consid-
erable mileage to complete a day’s
wash. ¢

I’m lucky to have a cooperative
neighbor who washes my sheets
for mie as we have no running
hot water in the house, but there
are plenty of women in the city
working under the same handicap
who have to struggle with their
own washing problems. Then too,
if you have only two rooms for a
family of four, there simply isn’t
room to sit down to your work.

So let’s continue pressing the
experts in Ottawa to get busy
building some low rental houses.
Nobody expects a revival of the
slogan ‘Two cars in every gar-
age,’ but Hon. C. D. Howe, our
minister of reconstruction, seems
to have adapted it to read, ‘Two
families in every garage.’

' HERE’S A TIP especially for
redheads. To bring out those
gleaming tones in your hair try
a parsley rinse. Put a small hand-
ful of parsley into two quarts of
cold water and bring to a boil.
Strain while hot and allow the
solution to cool for the final
shampoo rinse. It’s the high cop-
per content in the greenery that
does the trick.

to be constantly on the run try-
ing to pin her down to her own
yard. It seems. that a neighbor
has a sandpile for her children
and they are kept happy by the
hour building castles and con-
structing roads and bridges for
their ten-cent cars and trucks. I
have a feeling that we’ll be ac-
quiring a similar sandpile at the
earliest possible moment if I am
to have any peace of mind.

For those families .who live
some distance from a beach, this
would seem like a very good
idea to keep the kiddies occu-
pied. :

HAVE YOU noticed how the
smell of fried sausages clings

to the house long after dinner is
over? Try cooking them in the
oven either as is or with a can
of tomatoes over them. If there
are some left over, save. them for
the children’s lunch the next day
but camouflage them by wrap-

one.

TOMORROW is baby day at
the Metropolitan Health Clinic in
our district. I take little John
up regularly for a check-up and.
to get immunized against small-
pox, diphtheria and whooping-
‘cough. These clinics offer a valu-
able service to the community
and it is a shame that there are
not more of them.

According to the Vancouver
Public Health Officer we now
have one public health nurse for
a community of 7,500, whereas
the accepted standard in the
United States is one for every
2,000. ‘ :

It’s very fine for Leo Sweeney,
our self-styled tourist booster, to
go around boasting about Van-
couver’s natural advantages, our
beaches, our parks and our moun-
tains. But it’s the kind of city
we build and the services we
create that matter most to those
of us who live here. And, be-
tween our growing slums, obso-
lete transportation, unrepaired
streets and inadequate health and
hospital facilities, we haven’t so
much to boast about.—B.G.
