Our Government knows how important arts and culture are to ensuring the
strength of our economy and our communities. This is why we are proud to
support Vancouver Symphonique, which brings together talented artists and
members of the UBC Symphony Orchestra on the same stage for a unique
concert event. This is a wonderful opportunity for the region's Francophones
and Francophiles to enjoy an enriching cultural experience.

La présentation du spectacle Vancouver Symphonique, ce soir,
est l’occasion de mettre en valeur la riche diversité des sono-
rités et traditions que I’on retrouve dans la musique. Celles-ci
sont le reflet de l’extraordinaire abondance des talents musi-
caux existant 4 Vancouver, et offrent un portrait des nombreu-
ses connections liant la culture francophone au Canada et celle

du monde entier, en cette ére de globalisation. L’Orchestre sym-

phonique et I’Ecole de musique de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique sont
enchantés du partenariat avec le Centre culturel francophone de Vancouver rendant
cet événement possible, qui célébre a la fois le 25i¢me anniversaire du Festival

Coup de cceur francophone, le 75iéme anniversaire de CBC/Radio-Canada, et le
125iéme anniversaire de la ville de Vancouver. Plusieurs des participants de ce

projet ont des racines profondes au sein de notre institution, incluant Sal Ferreras et

Alain Mayrand, tous deux gradués de notre Ecole, ainsi que le professeur et chef

d’orchestre Jesse Read. De plus, ce spectacle donne I’ opportunité aux étudiants de

notre orchestre de joindre leur talent 4 I’ énergie créatrice des artistes remarquables,
proposant une diversité de styles musicaux, qui monteront sur scéne ce soir. Célé-

Vancouver Symphonique — Welcome Statement from the Director of
the UBC School of Music

Tonights presentation of Vancouver Symphonique will be an exciting and uplifting
display of a rich diversity of musical sounds and traditions! These represent the
extraordinary cultural wealth of musical talent in Vancouver, and also a snapshot
of the many connections of francophone culture within Canada and in the global
scene. The UBC Symphony Orchestra and School of Music are delighted to par-
tner with Le Centre culturel francophone de Vancouver to present this event, cele-
brating the 25th anniversary of the Coup de Coeur Festival, the 75th anniversary
of the CBC-SRC, and the 125th anniversary of the City of Vancouver. Several of
tonights performers have strong ties to the School of Music, including alumni Sal
Ferreras and Alain Mayrand, and conductor Professor Jesse Read. And this event
gives students in the orchestra an opportunity to join their talents with the ener-
gies of tonights wonderful performers and diverse styles. Together we celebrate
tonight the cultural and artistic collaborations that set the tone for the harmony
of our city!
