But coach Mark Neid says that while the team isn’t full of superstars, they make up for it with ambition. “This team isn’t quite as talented as some of the others,’’? Neid says. ‘‘But they have huge effort. These guys really want to win.”’ Neid says that other zone teams will be a challenge squad and Bulkley Valley has plenty of strong hitters. But Cal should be able to muster a good team effort. Chesley Neufeld and Dave Gardner are two key all- around players, and Chris Mantel is a stand-out Grade 11. Cal also bas a Grade 10 player from Thornhill Junior on the team — Tom Sager. And Neid says he’s im- pressed with what he sees. “*He’s full of raw talent,”’ Neid says. ‘‘He’s got in- credible potential to be a great: player if he puts his mind to it.”’ of last weekend’s season-opening Junior volleyball taumament held at Cal. has tough road ahead Sager’s playing _—for Caledonia because his own schoo! couldn’? find a coach for the team. “As far as I know, boys’ volleyball is gone at Thorn- hill,’? Neid says. ‘“That real- ly bums me because when J went through Thornhill we dominated. It bugs me to sce them without a team.’? Neid says without Thorn- hill, Centennial Christian and Skeena will really have to pick up the slack if Caledonia is to have a decent team next year. And that has him concerned: ‘We're well balanced this year,’ he says, ‘““We've gal a good group from all three schools. But next year that might not happen.” Neid says latcly it seems like it’s harder and harder to find the coaches and teacher sponsors needed for school sports teams. ‘Five years ago we never had any trouble,”’ he says, “T don’t know what’s going on.” Over the weekend, Cai at- tended a tournament in Hazelton, look for results in an upcoming Standard.
