- Election system lack TERRACE — More must be done to make it possible for low * income earners and people on social assistance to vote, says a local social services advocate. Gerald King of the Terrace Anti-Poverty Group Society said lack of money, education and information often means people who don’t earn a lot or are on social agsistatice aren’t interested or ignore elections. “I would say 15 to 20 per cent of (the voting age) population in the Terrace area simply don’t vote,” said King, ‘People on welfare seem to have given up. No matter who is in power, people on welfare say there won't be any benefit to them,”’ he said. That feeling continues the cy- cle of dependence on govern- ‘ment social services agencies and associated costs of taxation and lost opportunities, King ad- ded. “The more people can Nurses cut out extras TERRACE — Specialized nurses here have cut the addi- tional services they perform outside regular hours in support of job action taken by Lower Mainland psychiatric nurses. The public health nurses, home care nurses and communi- ty mental health nurses, most are employed by the Skeena health wnit, aren’t conducting any preventative seminars and clinics beyond their 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. hours, according to local nurse Marsha Lloyd. No essential services are af- fected by the overtime ban, she said, but nurses hope the action will increase public awareness of the labour situation. Lloyd said the local nurses have so far been given no orders to carry out further job action or prepare for a strike. “We're hopeful that it won't get to any job action,”’ she said. The local cuts follow walk- outs over the past two weeks by members of the B.C. Nurses Union and the Union of Psychiatric Nurses at some B.C. psychiatric institutions. The job action came after a breakdown in contract talks between the province and the nurses, who have been without a contract since December. Disputed issues include wages, benefits and job security. Gerald King become involved and par- ticipate, the less of a burden they'll eventually be on the system,’’ he said. What happens now is a con- centration ‘by political parties on those viewed as active and influential to the point that only their opinions are taken into ac- count, King said. - And although political parties do organize groups of people to become involved in elections, it is the role of governments to in- troduce more programs to en- courage people 'to vote, he said, People on low income may even be prevented from voting on election day because there isn’t easy and available transportation polling stations, added King. He said governments ‘should. then 4! place more ads on radio.and.. | television giving information on’ | a voting as there is a significant § number of people who. can't. read.
