quent understanding. and acceptance of people with this disorder.

It is a condition caused by damage to, or malformation of, the. -

brain, usually occurring before, during or shortly following birth.
“Cerebral” refers to the brain and ‘Palsy’? is a disorder of. | |
movement or-posture. It is characterized by an inability to fully
control movement. Some-of the‘causes of Cerebral Palsy-have -

~ been eliminated — ‘stich as ‘blood incompatibility between mother

and baby; untreated jaundice in the newborn; the reduction of.”

grams, and an increase in societal concern .of the pregnant
women’s health and abstinence of harmful substances (ie:

' alcohol, tobacco and drugs). Of great importance to help. prevent

C.P. cannot be cured, but it can be made more easily managed ay

by proper therapy attention soon after birth. The therapists at the -

Terrace Child Development Centre work with the families and chil-

_ dren from birth offering therapy, support and education.

The T.C.D.C., hiring a staff of 14, is overseen by an

. 11-member volunteer board of directors. Started in 1977 by con-
@ cerned parents and community members, the services have grown
_ and now service approximately 150 children from Terrace and

surrounding areas.

All board members are elected by the general membership ata
June annual general meeting and sit on the board for two-year
terms. In addition to overseeing the operation of the Centre, the
board aids in setting policy direction, acting as a liaison with pro-
vincial: ministers, and in fund raising.

If you are interested in contributing of your time and talents to

this important community service, you are welcome to purchase a
membership and attend our annual general meeting c on Jun 19 at

the Centre at 7:30 p.m.
