16 Terrace Review — Wednesday, Feb. 12. 1986 Conference planned — Rob Perrett TERRACE — The An- nual World Missions Conference at the Alliance Church in Ter- race is a unique oppor- tunity to focus on the world. The Christian and Missionary Alliance has missionaries, national New books for workers and churches in 51 countries, making it a global church. In addi- tion to local church in- put, two very special guests will report on God at work in other lands. Marcia Thomas, a Brit- ish Columbian, has spent the last four years in Irian Jaya as an office secretary serving eight missionaries and {2 na- tional staff. She will be reporting on a wide variety of ministries tak- ing place in that country. Rey. Rob Perret was born in India and return- ed on a special pilot pro- ject after several years of study and practical church ministries in Canada. Perret and his wife Donna were engag- ed in Marathi and Hindi language studies, but had to return to Canada because of new visa restrictions imposed by India. However, during this short stay in India, young readers by Andrea Deakin, Terrace reviewer ‘‘The Nova Space Explerer’s Guide’? (Crown/General Publishing: $24.95) first introduces children to the history of rocket propulsion and then takes them up on the space shuttle for a voyage above the earth. The trip allows the author to introduce and explain terms like ‘‘lithosphere’? and ‘‘hydro- sphere’, and helps‘the reader to follow and unders- tand the various photographs from space, and their significance, Planets visited Now the reader transfers to a translunar rocket for a trip to the moon and an understanding of the for- mation of its great craters. Thus, in turn, the various planets of the solar system are visited and explained until we reach the edge of the solar system and view the immensity still to be explored. This is a good text, simply and clearly set forth, the terms well and carefully explained. The author is in- clined to compare sizes to various areas like Manhat- ten Island which will be a difficult leap for many American children, apart from those abroad. Per- haps a more universal term of reference could have been found. The illustrations are copious; some of them very beautiful, drawn from NASA and other space sources. Detailed drawings and diagrams also accompany the text. Wolf of Shadows There is a strong story on the theme of nuclear holocaust by Whitley Strieber, co-author of ‘‘War- day’’. ‘‘Wolf of Shadows’? (Knopf/Random House of Canada: $14.50) is written from the perspective of the wild animals, Wolf of Shadows is a loner, living on the fringes of the pack, but he alone senses the danger which threatens the pack, the flash of fire, the ground shocks, the smell of burning. Desperate humans appear, and eventually a mother and daughter join the pack, now led by Wolf of Shadows, on a terrible journey south through the desperate frozen wasteland of nuclear winter. On the journey, a symbiosis develops as the wolf’s instinct and strength protect the woman and her child, and the humans’ knowledge warms the pack with fire and helps to feed them with canned food. This is a passionate book, effective because of the author’s control and deep caring. Each chapter is headed by a quotation from early American chiefs which poignantly underlines the theme. ‘‘The old Lakota was wise. He knew that man’s heart away from nature becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for living, growing things soon led to a lack of respect for humans, too.’’ Marcia Thomas they assisted in estab- lishing an English church ministry in the city of Pune. .
