Kermode feted
by city in 2004

NEXT YEAR will he the Year of the Kermode.

So says Terrace city council, which made the decta-
ration last week.

“I think ils lime we really take huge pride in what's
unique to northwestern B.C.,” said councillor David Hull.
__ He said it’s a nod to the Chinese tradition of connect-
ing years to certain animals.

Council ‘also-voted to call for proposals from local ar-
tists for-art featuring. the white bear. The resulting art
work would-be given awiy as gifts when occasion de-
mands.

The city already buys gifts — sometimes kermode bear
photos ~ (o give to ‘visiting dignitaries. But the art con-
cept is_that the city, would have. a. ready supply of prints
or other art to draw on,. °

Meanwhile, the’ fallout is continuing from Lieutenant-
Governor Tona Campagnolo’ § support of the Vancouver
island marmat for the 2010 Olympic. mascot.

Now Kitimat council has voted to ask Campagnolo —
who was-once MP. for Skeena — to return to the fold and
back: the Kermode -push for it to become the official
symbol ofthe Winter Olympics. |

Skeena.MILA Roger Harris has.also indicated he may
take the royal route and write Campagnolo, the Queen's
representative in B.C., and ask her to support the ker-
mode designation,

Terrace Crimestoppers are asking lor help to solve a hit and

run collision which resulted in injuries to a male pedestrian.
. On Monday, September 8th, 2003 at approximately 6:30
p.m, a 15 year-old Terrace resident was walking across
Thomas Street at the intersection with Halliwell Avenua.in
Terrace. A vehicle tumed fram Halliwell Avenue towards
Thomas Street'and struck'a pedestrian.

The pedesiflan wént.over-tha hacd of the vehicle on the
passenger's side and struck the windshield. The pedestrian
suffered injuries to: his hip, head and shoulders where
contacl was madé with the vehicle and the groundy.

The ‘vehicle. continued southbound.on, Thomas “Street
following the: accident. The driver made no attempt to render
assistance.’ ;
