The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 87 eloruary i! 2 | 5) 2002 A NEW name for the group charged with promoting tourism in the north will help it do its job. The Ter- race Tourism Society is looking forward to many good years. That’s society executive director Darryl Tucker will a blaw up of a guide that's been sent around the world to draw people to the area. THE TERRACE Tourism Council is no more. A creation of the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce and the city, the group is now officially known as the Terrace Tourism Society. It has its own constitution and by- laws and as a stand alone entity will be better able to do its job, says part time executive director Darryl Tucker. The change to non-profit society sta~ tus was official as of Jan. 25. “We can now create our own voice,” said Tucker, “Where we are (the log building on Hwy 16), there is the chamber of com- merce which is the business voice, the visitor information centre for visitors when they arrive and us, which will market outside of Terrace,” he added. One of the new society's first initia- tives was to place local fishing guide and broadcaster Tony Rutledge in three boat and sports shows in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. He’s part of the sports fishing com- ponent of all three shows and is high- lighting the angling experience of the northwest. Helping Rutledge are prize packages involving guiding and trips to the north- wesl, said Tucker. Terrace Tourism out to forge own path to promote this area “We're out to get people interested in our area. We are the home of the record 99-pound salmon,” said Tucker. Tucker, who joined the society last year, says it continues to receive steady inquiries through its website. “Germany is pretty strong, as is Cali- fornia and Alberta,” he said. He’s also helping with the planning here for later this year of a possible ga- thering of veterinarians. That would be heid during the time of Riverboat Days and inquiries include sea kayaking and fishing opportunities. Another idea occupying Tucker is what he’s calling the Terrace Paddle Party, a series of events to be staged over a variety of rivers to appeal to those with a range of skills. “We could bring a lot of pecple to Terrace for this,” Tucker added. The new society is gathering Feb. 17 at Don Diego’s from noon to 4 p.m. to share information and to develop more plans for attracting people to Terrace. Society president is Annalee Davis, a co-owner of Don Diego’s who is also on the board of the Northern B.C. Tour- ism Association, the vice president is Bruno Belanger of Gemma's and the se- cretary treasurer is Cindy Sabino of Carlson Wagonlit Travel, ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANTS LTD, 300-4546 Park Avenue, Terrace, BC V8G iva Tel: (250) 635-1494 Fax: (250) 635-1495 www.triton-eny.com Proud member of the Chamber of Commerce for 6 years.
