Board oe.by tha Government of British Columbia, ' THE FAMOUS § tion of British Columbia's northern “prairies.” As the years passed, farming became the mainstay of the re- gion’s economy. Fhe Second World War brought a congjderable change which saw the base of that econc- my broaden with the development of the forest, mining, and petrole- um and natural gas industries. However, farming still holds a prominent position and the devel. opment of those same industries which overtook and passed it has placed agriculture on a more sta- ble basis than ever before. With the economi¢ growth of the region and the increase In its road and rail facilities, the Peace / River area today holds out a pro- mise for. the future that could hardly have been foreseen by those Klondikers mearly three quarters of a century ago. Almost out of memory are the days when the population was all but eut off from southern British Columbia and practically all ite social and commercial contacts ing Alberta's capital city of Ed- monton and I recalf that pupils in the schools even thought this city was their capital. In the 1950's, the John Hart Highway and the exten- sion of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway opened the way to the commercial centres and coastal outlets of the bustling south. In the Peace River region itself, oil explorations in particular have brought a rash of road develop- ment that reaches out into the un- settled areas. A healthy agricultural. expan- sion should logically follow such a transformation . . . and there is plenty of room for it. At present, virtually all the farming is limited to a rather well- defined belt that begins south of the Peace River at Chetwynd and north of the river at Hudson Hope and gradually widens eastward to the interprovincial border.
