AREA POLITICIANS say they'll pressure the federal government to come up with some sort of financial as- sistance for workers hurt by the continued Skeena Cellu- lose closure. Both Skeena Alliance MP Andy Burton and Skeena Liberal MLA Roger Harris say the situation in the north- west mirrors that of other places in the province where the softwood tariff has closed mills. EI benefits for the majority of the Skeena Cellulose workers in Prince Rupert have finished and the same will soon happen to the company’s sawmill workers here. And the area’s federal skills development budget for re-training has been committed for this year. Burton said the key to the Skeena Cellulose problem remains negotiating new labour agreements to meet the company’s position that it needs to lower costs in order to re-open its mills. Yet he said circumstances here demand that federal assistance is in order. “PIL certainly do what | can,” Burton said last week. But he was pessimistic, saying the federal govern- ment has yel to come up with an assistance package for workers elsewhere hurt by softwood tariffs, “The softwood issue is huge but it’s not a top priority for the federal government and if they’re not making that a lop priority, it’s going to be difficult for us here,” said Burton. The federal government has yet to officially decide what it will do about mill closures resulting from the softwood tariff, but it is worried that any. assistance might again spur American charges that the industry here is being subsidized. MLA Harris said he’s contacting senior B.C. federal cabinet minister Herb Dhaliwal to impress upon him the need to do something here. The two have already met, when Dhaliwal was in Contact the feds ONE PERSON who wants to go to college but who can’t because a federal skills program’s budget is committed, says the federal government should find more maney, “There are a lot of us who are willing and who are motivated,” said Colleen Austin, adding that putting people back to work will improve the tax base here. She went on employment insurance last year and worked with Interconnect, a local employment agency, to pursue a teaching career. Austin’s application for money was submitted to the federal Human Resources Development Canada office here in August, But that was after the money ran out because of high demand. “This is a great opportunity and we need to be patient and pro-active,” said Austin of the skills program. Her hope is that if enough peopte contact the federal government, it will boost the amount of money this month so those who do qualify, can still attend school, “Given the time frame with school starting, they need to take a look at a solution,” said Austin. “If nothing can be available in a few weeks, than it should be for those who can start in the January term.” Your Personal & Family-Counselling Centre SO UMSELLOR " odtACey, € OUNSELLOR COUNSELLING A. [twill be put to good use instead of paying people to stay at home,” Harris continued. Yet he’s doubtful if his own government will came up with a specific assistance package, saying employment insurance and related matters are a federal responsibil- ity. “Have | got a cheque to start up a program? No,” said Harris. “We are limited in what we can do.” At the same time, Harris said he hasn’t been asked to lobby his own government. “The government that has the S29 HAIR # ESTHETICS * REFLEXOLOGY ELECTROLYSIS * MASSAGE & BODY TREATMENTS © TANNING * WAXING BAGK-TO-BASICS LITRE SALE 95, ‘SHAMPOO. & “CONDITIONER | te surplus and the means to use it is the federal govern- ment,” he said.
