Did you know that MAILLARDVILLE will be 100 years old in 2009? A committee has been formed in order to prepare an unforgettable celebration to honor the heritage and the unique identity of this "community with a francophone heart". To warm up for this "double-jubilee", over 500 people came to the annual FETES DE MAILLARDVILLE to celebrate Maillardville's97th birthday on September 24 th, 2006. Societe Maillardville-Uni and its community partners - Societe PlaceMaillardvilleSociety and Centre Bel-Agejoined forces once again to offer the public an afternoon of music, dance, barbecue, and activities for the young and young at heart. The beautiful sunny afternoon ended on a sweet note with a piece of birthday cake. Maillardville Business Trivia Info Hunt Contest Get to know what's new and what you never knew about the businessesand shops in Maillardville! ! The merchants have a contest that rewards trivia buff shoppers with prize money. There are fin $100 prizes to be won, the prize money is eligible only for purchasesat the 25+ partici- -. pating stores in the area. The contest starts on November 5th , the day of the Clean Up event, and runs till December9th, 2006. Entry forms will be distributed to all participants of Clean Up Daze and also available to the public from Joyful Noise (957 Brunette), Magic Vacuum {934 Brunette) and various area stores or by sending email to ahphstuff@yahoo.caor by downloading from www.sudsnscissors.cathroughout the duration of the contest. Maillardville Residents ' Association Celebrates 1 st Birthday November marks the first anniversary of the Maillardville Residents'Association. The year has passed so quickly, and from our humble beginnings of eight members, we are now approaching one hundred. We have become a registered society with a Board of Directors and have already done much to fulfill our two guiding principles: to help make Maillardvillea safer place to live and to make an ongoing contribution to the well being of our community. The Association has members on many important initiatives including the Task Force on Maillardville Revitalization,the Gateway Task Force, the Maillardville in Bloom and the Planningthe Streets committees. In addition, our group organized the successfulcommunity Crime Forum in May, as well as participated in the Clean Up Days and the Musique Chez Nous program. In October and November, two Residentscommittees were struck; the Crime Prevention Strategies Committee and the NelsonCreek Stream KeepersCommittee. We are very hopeful that these two committees will very soon be making a real difference to our community! We are very proud of the accomplishmentsof our Residents'Associationso far and we look forward to an even more successful 2nd year! Come join us!! frankandfrank@telus.netor 604-931-5650 - November - December 2006 MAILLARD VILLE TODAY Lest we forget Remembrance Day display at the Museum Musee Mackin Museum is currently running our Lest we forget RemembranceDay display at the Museum, where we feature local and general items to honor our Past & Present military. We have a wonderful display of memories, photos, uniforms and local history. Along with the story of the house and the Pioneersof the area, there are toys, dolls, and period rooms on display. The Lest we forget display is on until Nov 14th and then we start getting ready for "Light up the Square " on Saturday December 2nd. This is a marvelous display of color and oomfort. Heritage Square, Mackin Museum, Placedes Arts and the caboose get lights, lights and more lights, the Giant Holly tree beside the Museum is lit and, internally, in Mackin Museum, there will be decorations and the smells of Christmas. With the fireplace going and Christmas carols in the air, it is always a treat to visit a house just like your Grandma used to have. Musee Mackin Museum, Coquitlam's Heritage, DoHand Toy Museum in Heritage Square in Historic Maillardville is a place to oome to throughout the year. Entry is by Donation Vancity Maillardville Advisory Committee The Maillardville Advisory Committee (MAC) was formed from the merger between Vancity and Village Credit Unions. Made up of former Village directors, members from the community and representation from Vancity staff and Board, the comritittee assists Vancity in its interaction with our community. To do this the MACis a granting body, receiving applications for financial assistancefrom oommunity non profit organizations. Recently, three grants were awarded: To the Societe Place Maillardville for a French Youth Program, to Les Scouts Francophoneto assist them with there display tent at the Festival du Bois and to the Coquitlam Heritage Society for the restoration of the original Our Lady of Lourdes church organ. MACis also an advisory committee. As part of this function, we have been working closely with Vancity Developmentson plans for the new building located at Nelson and Brunette. The combined commercial and residential development will include a new Vancity Branch as well as a community meeting room. We are very excited by this project and look forward to breaking ground in 2007. As an advisory force, we hope to bring fresh ideas and opportunities to the Board and management of Vancity that will continue to strengthen the relation ship between the Credit Union and our community. Congratulations to Vancity for supporting this unique initiative and also to all the oommittee members dedicated to its success.
