JAN 12 1981 TO: Mayor and Council . January 8, 1981 THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM C 0 {J N , MEMORANDUM FROM: Public Works Committee Report of Public Works Committee meeting held Tuesday, December Sth, 1981. . . IN ATTENDANCE: Alderman LL.M. Traboulay, Chairman Alderman J.J. Keryluk, Co-Chairman F.E. Peters, P. Eng.,, City Engineer Item I Re: Request for Lighting at Lions Way Crosswalk The Committee considered a letter from Mr. Davy dealing with the lighting at the cr Davy points out that it is g with the’ same problem. fact that crosswalks are not safet often occur in crosswalks hec seen by the drivers and that Good lighting is therefore very important t alk’, The Committee recognizes that there are many crosswalks in the City which do not have adequate lighting. However, several special considerations apply to this crosswalk. In the first place, it is situated in such a position that drivers often are concentrating on merging from two lanes into one lane rather than in whether the crosswalk is occupied. ‘in the second place, pedestrians using the crosswalk often are concerned about crossing the road to catch another bus and therefore are less inclined to pay attention to traffic. Council dealt with a request for lighting once in the past and the request was not approved because money was not available. The previous request involved the replacement of the existing overhead Sign poles with a combination sign plus street light pole at each side. The cost would have been in the order of $3,000.00. Instead of doing this, the Committee would like to try the installation of a floodlight on each existing pole aimed over the crosswalk as shown in the attached sketch. The cost of this would be approximately $1,200.00. The Committee recommends that this project be approved as’ part of the 198] Budget and that the necessary funds be allocated immediately so that the project can be started. A sketch showing the proposed arrangement of the floodlighting is attached.
