—e eee Handy fishing terminology list Spring - Chinook over 50cm. Jack - Any saimon under 50cm Trophy - A fish of large enough size to be bigger than any fish you have caught before. The accepted weights are for chinook aver 50 Ibs, for steelhead over 20 Ibs. Mount - A trophy fish pre- pared or reproduced by a taxidermist. Plug - A plastic or metal lure with a sloping bill. When pulled through the water dives and wiggles. Hotshot - A type of plug. Plunking - Form of fishing where the lure is cast out into the water and is held by a weight. The rod is then usually placed in a rod holder. Other names meaning the same are ‘Bar Fishing’, ‘Bank Fishing’. Plugging - Method of pull- ing a plug through the water. Another slang term used is ‘hotshoting. Driffing - Bouncing a lure or bait along the bottom of a river (fishing hole), Another name is bottom bouncing. Floating - Using a float to keep the lure off the bottom but still allowing the bait to move with the current. Snake - A nylon tube filled with lead - a form of weight. | Pyramid Weight - A lead weight shaped like a pyramid used mostly for plunking in current. Kitimats - A large metal $poon usually used for salmon fishing. ' Goey Bob - A plastic imita- tion of a roe cluster. Very pap- ular among sportsman. ' Row Ball or Roe Bag - A ball of salmon eggs that is wrapped in a cloth or nylon. Tags - A licence for steel- head and/or a licence and plastic tag that is placed on any chincok salmon. Seallce - Asalt water para- ~ site that attaches itself to a fish along the base of the anal fin. This indicates a fresh fish. Kelt - A° steelhead that has spawnec and is return ing to th ocean. Summer Run - Usually referring to a steelhead migrating upstream in the months of June, July and August. Bonk - Bonker, Bonking, meaning to hit a fish over the head, usually with a piece ot ’ all wood. Slang term for a keeper. Bankers - Fishermen fishing from shore. Leader - The line between your hook and the swivel. Mainline - Line that is on your reel and goes along your rad down to the swivel. Slab - Large, usually trophy sized fish. Kipe - Hook in the nose of a fish: normally found in males. Spooked - Scaring the fish through noise or sudden move- ments. Another term is ‘We've put the pool down!‘ . . Ginclear - Meaning absolute pure water. Being able to see to the bottom in 6” to 8” of water, Chrome Bright Nickle - A fresh silver fish usually straight aut of the ocean. is a bit of a truck sticking the end of the nylon up through the tums.
