BG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 12, 1997 Seahawks take Zone Finals THE BOYS at Centennial Christian cruised ta victory in Smithers two weeks ago lo lake the Junior B baskelball, Zone Championships. , The Seahawks started the season slowly, but they really picked things up in the new year thanks to consistently strong play from. players like Kevin Braam, Aaron VanGelder and Chris Mantel, And the Zone Finals February 28 to March 1 proved to be no exception, as the boys trounced their rivals by an average of 19 points per game. Five teams entered the lourney, including Smithers Secondary, Bulkley Valley Chris- lian, Houston Christian and G.M. Dawson from Masset. The first game pitted the Scahawks against the hoys from Smithers Secandary. The Smithers squad never had much of a chance against the well-balanced Seahawks who took them apart, winning 78-45. ‘Most of the teams tried to play a zoue defence against us,'’ says coach Edgar Veldman. ‘That slows down the game and we're a running team. So to counter it we put on some full-court pressure and ended up getting lots tumovers and fast breaks early on. Then we just hung on to the lead”? The second game saw the Seahawks battle Bulkley Valley in a tighter game that still ended up in a comfortable 64-54 win. More than half of Centennial’s points in that game came from one player — Kevin Braam, who posted a Jordanesge 33 point effort. Braam was backed up by: 13 points from Aaron VanGelder, oe The Finals turned out to be a rematch with Bulkley Valley and once again the Seahawks came out oa top, Kevin Braam had 23 points, Aaron VanGelder 14 and Chris Mantel 11 in Centennial’s winning effort. Braam’s outstanding elforts earned him al award as tournament MVP, aiid” Chiris ° Mantet picked up tournament All Star, The Zones are as far as Centennial can go this year because there aren’l any Provin- cial Finals for Junior B basketball, How-. ever, two of the Scalawks’ strongest players, Kevin Braam = and = Aaron VanGelder are only in grade nine, so they will be returning again next year, That could make for one powerful Junior squad. And Veldman says if the team is really strong, he will cansider moving them into the tough Junior A division, which cul- minates in a Provincial Final, “It's a toss-up,” Veldiman says. ‘‘By playing as a B team, | can let all the players have lots of court tine. But ifwe move into the A division the better players will be playing more.”’ Veldman says his team wasa good bunch to work with all through the year. “T started with 12 guys and I ended up with 12,’’ he says. “They were very com- mitted.”’ AMAN PARMAR and Bryan vanDyk of Veritas Schoal do a little sweeping in the Terrace Curling Club's School League.
