B12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 13, 1996 Swim masters kick off OUR MASTERS Swim Club is off to a flying start this year after a stroke clinic featuring a former Canadian record-holder was held Sun- day, November 3. Neil Harvey was in Ter- race to give the Masters some helpful bints on im- proving stroke . technique, efficiency and nutrition. Harvey had previously com- peted at the youth National level, breaking the Canadian record in 1978, He went on to establish several Master’s records. Harvey’s 16 years of coaching experience proved invaluable as he gave the 14 swimmers from Terrace and Smithers advice on every- thing they had ever wanted to know about swimming. A dry-land discussion _fol- lowed the three hour pool session. The Terrace Masters swim every Mondays and Wed- nesdays, and John Dando of the club says they’re always open to new members. ‘We're open io any swimmer 20-years-old and over,’’ he says. “‘And we're really looking forward to the games.’’ Several of the Masters will be competing in the North- em BC Winter Games. As the host city, Terrace gets to have its own team, in addi- tion to the zone team. The Masters will also be looking forward to the BC Masters Championships this May in Cranbrook. Rugby awards THE TERRACE Northmen Rugby Football Club fin- ished their 26th year of rugby last Saturday with an awards dinner and dance, A number of fun awards went out to those individu- als who drew attention to themselves off the field or outside the sphere of normal rugby activities, The highlight of the eve- ning was the presentation of “the hardware,’’ Northcoast Rugby Union president David D. Hull and Dr. Dale Greenwood presented play- ing captain George DaCosta, and coaches Ken Mansfield and Ernie Dusdal with the RD. ‘Dale’ Greenwood Cup, em- blematic of supremacy in the mgby sub-union, Club president and new dad Robert Sarich presented the rookie of the year award to Scott ‘Stewie’? Stewart. Stewart was not only excep- tional on the field for a first- year player, but was also ac- live as the teacher-sponsor for the Caledonia High School rugby team. Most valuable player went to club veteran Willie McCleary, McCleary lead the team by example with a tremendous on-field _per- formance during 1996. In accepting the award, McCleary blurted out to the fitter, younger players, “Not bad for a fat old man eh?’ Brian Sayewich was given the unanimous vote by the selection committee as the 1996 most improved player. Sarich accepted the trophy on Sayewich’s behalf as he was in Las Vegas for the weekend, Sayewich is a veteran member of the Northmen experiencing a late blossom- ing of skill, effort and per- formance. Sarich challenged the other senior members to strive for improvement, no matter what their ages. , The high point of the — awards ceremony was the Presentation of the Brian Kormendy Memorial Trophy. This trophy is pre- sented annually to the indi- vidual who has contributed the most to the club and to the true spirit of rugby. Marianne Kormendy pre- sented the 1996 award to Willie McCleary who has demonstrated for years the effort and devotion that is required fo sustain a club with the level of success that ihe Northmen have en- joyed for the past 26 years. Badminton clinic THE TERRACE BADMINTON Club is hosting Badminton BC’s development coach all this week, with clinics starling tonight to help prepare for the Northern BC Winter Games. While the main reason for his trip is to conduct an umpiring course on Friday evening, he will also be having badminton skills clinics for schools, the Terrace Junior Club and the Adult Badminton Club, The junior clinic will be held tonight at Skeena Jr. Secondary from 8-10 pm. The adult clinic: will be thursday night, November 14° at Thornhili Jr. Secondary from 8-10 pm.
