- BO Terrace Review — Wednesday, May 9, 1990 CANADA WORLD YOUTH program developer Joanne Drebett was in Terrace recently to obtain endorsement from the community to approve a youth exchange between Canada and Indonesia here this fall. With her are Northwest Development Education coordinator Frances Bridsell and Canada Employment Centre counsellor Candace Pritchard. Copyright — charges | dismissed. . TERRACE— A provincial court judge has dismissed charges against Terrace Video Stop and owner James Wold of violating the Copyright Act by offering illegal videotape copies of movies for rental, Terrace lawyer Gordon Cramp- ton, who represented the federal government in the case, said last week the judge ruled. that there was insufficient proof that Video Stop knew the tapes were infring- ing copyright law. By the time the case got to court, he said, only one charge of the original eight was heard. Although there was no- question that the tape in question was an illegal copy, the section of the Copyright Act involved requires proof that the proprietor knew it was an unauthorized tape, Crampton said. It was the first such case in this area, but Crampton noted that charges under that section of the Copyright Act are becoming more and more frequent across Canada, Canada World Youth exchange group | to be here this fall by Betty Barton This fall Canada World Youth will come to Terrace with a group of 14 young people — half from Indonesia, half from all parts of Canada. The Canada World Youth program aims at fostering cultural understanding and a _ growing awareness of develop- “ment issues, both in Canada and overseas. The host communities become the schools,, says pro- gram developer Joanne Drebett, _ Rather than going to school, the ‘participants in the program have ‘the opportunity to learn by liv- ing with host families (in pairs — one Canadian and one In- donesian to each household) and - working as volunteers in the community. And the community has the opportunity to learn about other parts of Canada and a third-world country through ‘personal contact with the par- ticipants. Drebett was in the area last week to determine the communi- ‘ty interest and support of the program. ‘‘The response has “been very, very positive,”? she placements and to get to know the community and its resources. In mid-September, the 14 young people plus an Indonesian group leader will begin their three-and-a-half month stay in Terrace. This program is a good example of global community building, says Joanne Drebett. Canada World Youth was last in Terrace in 1983/84 with an In- donesia/Canada exchange and the year previous with an In- dia/Canada exchange. Canada World Youth likes to stay in each community at least two years to give the communities the full benefit of the learning ‘and exchange that happens be- tween community members and participants, This fall, it is hoped that the Indonesia pro- gram will take in Terrace, Prince Rupert and in at least one com- munity on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Canada World Youth is a non-political, non-religious pro- gram partially funded by CIDA (Canadian International ; on Development. Agency). and available at no direct cost to any Canadian young person between the ages of 17 and 20, It is a bilateral program, which means that Canada World Youth funds the Canadian portion of the pro- gram and the exchange country organization (in this case, the Ministry of Education in In- donesia) funds the exchange phase of the program. The 14 young people will continue on from Terrace in mid-December to a small, rural village in In- donesia where they will spend FREE B BLA another three and one half months, The Canadians will return to Terrace at the end of the program to share their ex- periences in host families and work placements. For more information on be- coming a host family, a work supervisor, or if you ‘have any ideas for a camp location for the ‘initial two weeks of the program for the 60 participants and staff going to.the three.
