ce Israel employing genocidal se aa —< = methods agal \ nst Lebanon 7 By MIKE PHILLIPS . TORONTO — Israel’s criminal invasion of Lebanon 'S aimed at ‘‘solving’’ the Palestinian question by de- Stfoying the people of Palestine, Communist Party leader William Kashtan charged June 23. Speaking at a meeting to discuss the current Mideast | “tsis sparked by Israeli aggression in Lebanon, Kashtan Said “what's involved here, is genocide, expansion and _ 4nhexation’’; masked by Israel’s phony claim that its actions are~based on the need to establish its security. The only reason Israel is doing what it is doing, and is able to get away with it, is because American imperial- ‘sm is supporting it 150%, he declared. Kashtan noted the growth of solidarity committees | ross Canada calling for Israel to leave Lebanon UNconditionally, and to raise money, collect medicines, Clothing and other aid for the victims of Zionist aggres- “Sion in Lebanon. He pledged the Communist Party’s best efforts in helping to establish more such committees Maid of the Palestinian people. Kashtan said the Israeli invasion of Lebanon proved that the so-called peace process launched by the Camp avid agreements between Israel and Egypt is dead. Instead of peace, it brought war and destruction to the Middle East’, he said. The Zionist aggression, Kashtan Said, was the culmination of the second phase of the real Intent of Camp David — denial of the Palestinian People’s right to national self-determination and of their t to exist as a people. Israel’s seige of West Beirut, backed by phalangist banese forces in the eastern part of the Lebanese | Capital, he said, is aimed at trying to smash the PLO, the €stinian people’s main instrument for achieving a homeland of their own. Phoney Proposal = The Camp David proposals for Palestinian autonomy”’, Kashtan pointed out, expressed the total Tejection by Israel, and every U.S. president since Jimmy Carter of the right to self-determination of the Palestinians. He condemned the needless deaths of some 10,000 Men, women and children resulting from Israeli aggres- Son and he charged that reported atrocities by the Israeli Y against Palestinian and Lebanese Arabs closely Ravel the kind of brutality experienced by the Jews of Urope at the hands of Hitler fascism. Responding to one Teport that the Israeli army was numbering Arabs, in the nas Way the fascists tattooed concentration camp viC- ims, Kashtan declared: ‘Apparently there are elements within the Israeli Government who have learned no les- Song from Nazism, except to do the same thing as the 42is in the cruelest, most vicious way.” € real reasons behind the invasion of Lebanon run Much deeper than seeking revenge for the attempted Ing to create a buffer zone between the two countries, He wometres inside Lebanese territory, Kashtan said. Beponted out that with the Israeli army just outside West rut there’s little credibility to the buffer zone claim. From the very beginning, and as long as the Zionist Capitalist class rules in Israel, the aim has been to build a Sha Israel at the expense of the Arab countries’’, he “ss Bigger Dreams dl Beside Israel’s dreams for a larger market in the Mid- € East under its domination, American imperialism, ““4shtan said, also works for a Middle East under its fluence with a more powerful Israel as the main 4nti-Soviet and anti-national liberation force in the re- 8i0n. He charged that the area has become, more and More a base for U.S. troops in the Middle East. Lxashtan pointed out that shortly before the invasion of Wi banon Israeli defence minister Ariel Sharon consulted e ith the U.S. Government in Washington. The U.S. has *Pressed its agreement in principal with Israel’s self- acclaimed right to expand its territory to ‘‘protect” Its Curity. Coupled with the U.S. veto of the latest U.N. Solution demanding Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and the $2-billion, most of it an outright gift, made avail- le to the Israeli Government by the U.S. to buy arms, htan charged U.S. complicity and support of Israeli ssion is obvious. When the Reagan administration oe such complicity “it is lying in its teeth”, Kashtan 48sassination of the Israeli ambassador to London, or - Arab disunity and American imperialist backing for Israel’s expansionist aims have made the Israeli aggres- sion against Lebanon possible, Kashtan said. Fear of social change by the leaders of many of the Arab coun- tries has prevented them from standing up to Israeli aggression. Unprecedented Opposition However, Kashtan pointed out that ‘despite Israel's military successes, facilitated by U.S. help, one could say that neither the Israeli Government nor the US. administration will be able to achieve their objectives in the Middle East.’’ He said Israel will not be able to -occupy Lebanon indefinitely and at the same time, world-wide condemnation of the aggression grows as does the pressure on Israel to withdraw from all oc- cupied territories. Another significant factor in this regard, Kashtan pointed out, is the unprecedented opposition to Israel's actions from within the country itself. Along with the three communist members of the Knesset who moved a non-confidence motion in the Begin government for launching the invasion against Lebanon, Kashtan re- ported that 10 other members of the Israeli parliament abstained from voting with the government, indicating growing dissatisfaction within Israel with the aggression. Since then, there have been several rallies in Israel with as many as 5,000 participants protesting the war, and Jews around the world have publicly voiced their opposition to Israel’s actions. : With the death of Camp David, Kashtan said, it was time to consider the proposal being advocated by the Soviet Union which urges the convening of an inter- national conference to work out an all-embracing settle- CP condemns Israeli invasion _. TORONTO — “The invasion of Lebanon _ by Israeli armed forced has shocked the _ world with its wanton destruction of life and drawl of all Israeli armed forces from _ 2 Lebanese territory : ‘e The withdrawal of Israeli armed forces _ from all territories seized in the 1967 war. ~ “¢ Urges an international conference be _ tries, and the PLO representing the Pales- - tinian people, and including the Soviet Union _ ~ and the U.S. to work out a just settlement — which would guarantee peace in the Middle | . PLO LEADER ARAFAT: Genocide will not solve the Pales- tinian question. ment ofthe dangerous crisis in the Mideast, acrisis which could endanger world peace. This is what the Canadian Government, the New Democratic Party and the trade union movement in Canada should be working and fighting for, Kashtan said. While Prime Minister Trudeau could be supported for sharply criticizing the Israeli invasion and calling for the withdrawal of troops from Lebanon, Kashtan said, the Canadian Government must be condemned for rejecting the Communist Party’s demand that it impose sanctions on the Government of Israel. Kashtan criticized the NDP and the leadership of the trade union movement for backing Israel’s actions 100% and objectively acting ‘“‘as voices of American im- perialism in the working-class movement instead of speaking as they should, freely and independently of the positions of American imperialism and the Israeli capitalist class. As part of the pressure on the Canadian Government to impose sanctions against Israel, Kashtan said both the NDP and the trade union movement will have to be compelled to speak up, as they should, in defence of the rights of the. Palestinian Arab peoples, their right to self-determination including the establishment of an independent homeland, the withdrawal of Israel from all territory taken in 1967 and recognition of the right of all states and peoples to exist including Israel. ‘There will be no lasting and just peace in the Middle East until these aims are achieved.
