Aa “YOU REALLY KEPT THE FAITH BABY!” stead of 100 million is some consolation, but not a victory. Experts cannot confirm the ef- fectiveness of the system or that it will be adequate to combat the highly developed Soviet weapons. “If we deploy the ABM, we are in effect confirming an ac celeration of the arms race we are trying to avoid. By not con- structing the defense missile system, we can begin talks with the Soviet Union with a posi- tive offer. “Estimates on the cost of the Sentinel system have been set at the five to six billion dollar figure. This is considered to be a low estimate. To make such an investment an addition to our already tedious defense costs can only indicate to other world powers that we do not believe in our own peace ef- forts. “We are on the brink of arms-control talks with the Soviets, It would be hypocritical to enter these talks in which we seek to lessen world ten- sions and establish peace be- tween the two nations when we are building better methods of battle at home.” Missouri Teamster PA ST = HAR RUINGTORA ~ CANADIANS MUST ACT At this critical time Cana- dians cannot and must not give Mr. Trudeau what he has asked for in the way of ‘a free hand,” with respect to decid- ing what Canada's position should be towards the U.S. anti-ballastic missile program. There was never such a time as the present, when the gov- ernment needs to be instructed by the people. George Harris in UE News “Excuse me, am I early for the la‘> night sitting or late for the early morning one?” Fighting convention The 20th Convention of the Communist Party of Canada meeting in Toronto over Easter Weekend adopted, in spirited debate, a fighting working class eg to meet the needs of the Canadian people. The main policy resolution defines the main feature of the present time as being the grow- ing demand for change involving ever-widening sections of the Canadian people. The movements for change, while still limited in scope around specific issues, are being compelled more and more to challenge the capitalist power structure in the struggle to satisfy their economic and social aims, The convention noted that within the move- ments for change forces are emerging which question capitalism and search for socialist solu- tions. The very emergence of such forces attests to the fact that the socialist alternative grows out of the very conditions of the present Cana- dian reality. In noting this fundamental truth of Marxism the Convention issued a militant call to all Cana- dian Communists to redouble their efforts to build the Party and its Press amongst the ranks of the working class and, in particular, amongst the industrial workers the most decisive sections of the class. The Convention called upon Communists to redouble their efforts also to win support amongst the broad sections of the public for the just struggles of the working class to win satis- faction of their economic, social and political demands. It called also for the trade union movements of both French and English Canada to unite the workers of both nations that they may wrest from the monopoly capitalist Establishment and its main political vehicle of the moment—the Trudeau government—a freely-negotiated new confederal pact between the two nations, a new Canadian Constitution, as being the best sov- ereignty solution in the interests of the working people of both nations. The political struggles of the working class against the capitalists are the bonds that make it possible to unite the workers of all countries in a common front for peace, democracy and socialism, This great principle of working class internationalism finds its embodiment in the unity of the Communist and Workers Parties. In full appreciation of this the Convention ane ed its full support to the success of the Inter- national Conference of Communist and Work- ers’ Parties which will convene in Moscow on June 5th. The 20th Convention proved that the Commu- nist Party is a force — a growing force — in Canadian social and political life. We wish it every success in achieving the great goals it has set to help mobilize Canadian workers, farmers, students and intellectuals to win their economic and social aims of today, and the socialist future of tomorrow. Defence Dept. Too Busy To Be Interested In Peace The defence department says its computer is so busy with defence it doesn’t have time for peace. In brief, that is what De- fence Minister Leo Cadieux and Treasury Board President C. M. Drury said in written Commons replies to Mark Rose (NDP— Fraser Valley West). Mr. Rose had asked -how much federa} money is being granted to universities for stra- tegic studies — $141,000 this year from the defence depart- ment; how much is_ being. granted for studies of -hew to prevent war — nothing; and whether federal computers are suitable and available for pro- cessing peace research data. Resources Minister J. J. Greene said the computer in _his department is suitable for peace research and could. be made available if the user paid. He was overruled by Mr. Drury, who said a number of federal computers — notabl that of the National Researe Council—may be suitable for such work, but it 1s against government policy to make any of them ayailable to non@eu- ernment users. — Commonwealth ers “PACIFIC TRIBUNE—APRIL 11, 1969—Page 3.
