Resident killer whales that stay in B,C, waters are now listed as threatened and transient killer whales that pass through our waters are listed as vulnerable, accord- ing to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wild- life in Canada, Although all fishing of northern abalone is banned, numbers of the sheilfish continue to decline and it has now been listed as threatened, “It has suffered an 86 per cent decline over the last 15 years and continues to decline at a rate of about 40 .per cent since complete closure of the fishery in ' 1990 — probably as a result of continued high levels of ” says the com- mittee’s report on the abalone designation. ‘“There is evidence that the decline and fragmentation of the population is impairing the reproductive abilily of the species.”’ The “threatened”? desig- nation indicates a species is at risk of becoming “endangered’’, or in serious danger of becoming extinct within Canada. Other species found in B.C. that appeared on the list include a couple of species of peregrine falcon, a few species of stickleback fish, and three owls. North coast natives hunt seals rather than whales HUNTING seals and sea lions is more im- portant to the Tsimshian people than any aboriginal right to hunt whales, says the na- tive group’s chief negotiator, Gerald Wesley says the Tsimshian have never sought in Ireaty negotiations the op- tion to bunt whales. “We haven’t had any one of our com- munities or our leaders saying at this point in time we want treaty rights to harvest whales,” Wesley said after Makah natives in Washington state last week exercised ‘~ their treaty right to huut a gray whale, “We weren't historically as a people as active in whaling as the Makah or the Nuu- Chah-Nulth people on Vancouver Island “But we were seal har- inamunai harvesters were,”’ he said. vesters, and sea lions. oceans and water ways,’ That continues today, he said, adding Tsimshian fishermen regularly take seals “T just finished a meal of sea lion along with the recent oolichan harvest. Our people are still eating them today,” he said, from the headded, adding the subsistence harvest is accepted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Wesley said the Tsimshian will seek to ensure their tight to hunt seals and sea lions is part Of their eventual jreaty., Virtually ‘anything we eat now is some-’ thing we’re looking at ensuring we're able fo carry with us into the future.’” It’s possible the issue of whale hunting could yet be considered by the Tsimshian, Ptek de ee Yd Tory tussles with MP over access A POLITICAL opponent of Skeena MP Mike Scott in the last federal election thinks Scolt is using House of Commons security to keep him away. Kent Glowinski, a failed Progressive Conservative candidate here in 1997, says his security clearance was changed by House of Com- mons security after he dropped in on Scolt’s office recently. Glowinski said he was in the house on a pass to volunteer at a PC MP's of- fice but decided to visit the Skeena Reform MP as well and sec if he wanted to mect some time. Security guards Jater in- vestigated Glowinski at the request of Scott's office and he says he’s now escorted by guards to and from his stated destination when he’s in the House. “Tcan’t go visit the office of my own member of Par- liament,”’? said Glowinski, who now works in Ottawa for the PC Party of Canada headquarters. Scott says his office staff were simply following a recent Parliamentary security request that MP’s offices report any un- authorized or unscheduled visits. ‘It’s aothing to do with Mr. Glowinski or anyone else on a personal basis,’’ Scott said, adding his office staff had no idea who Glowinski was or that he had run against Scott. “Its just a matter of security. When he showed up unannounced = and without a pass she just ad- vised security and left it with them,”’ He said he will try to meet with Glowinski if time permits. JUNE 1999 SUNDAY. MONDAY” . The endangered or threatened species within this district are all birds — the marbled murrelet, Swainson's hawk, and the American peregrine falcon. Vulnerable species in this district include the grizzly bear, iluscus wolverine, fisher, tailed frog, ' short- cared owl, trumpeler swan, gyrfaicon, and bull trout, The committee that maintains the list consists of a group of scientists and wildlife experts from several Canadian agencies and universities. Although the list helps taise public awareness, Kate Smaliwood of West Coast Environmental Law says what's really needed is com- prebensive legislation pro- tecting endangered species in B.C. “B.C, has the mast biodiversity in Canada with more living things than any other province or. tenitory and our government is doing the least to protect it,” Smallwood said. All other provinces either have endangered species legislation in place, or are drafting it or are commitied to do so, she said, on container.
