Kitimat teachers union president Neil Worboys said 18 teachers there received layoff notices in April. Three of those remain laid off and are on a recall list. The 15 other teachers, he said, found some sort of employment elsewhere. And 10 temporary teachers, those who had contracts until the end of last June, were told they would not be needed this year, “We feel the unfairness,”’ said Worboys. ‘‘As well as our board office disappear- ing, our personnel we can deal with on an individual basis have disappeared. The work force has deen downsized, not just in teachers but in administra- tion, maintenance, custodial, etc.” Worboys did say two new teachers, a home economics teacher, and. a district... counsellor, were hired. ' "T think overall the sys- tem is in a crisis because we’re ina large deficit posi- tion,’ he added. Worboys said Kitimat’s school infrastructure has basically disappeared, ‘‘We had a very viable functioning separate district and once amalgamation oc- curred more and more of our resources have eroded or disappeared,’’ said Wor- boys. - “For example, the’ school board said if there would be cuts, they would be equita- ble meaning if the resource centre in Kitimat needed to be disbanded then the one in Terrace would be also.
