The Vancouver Island ‘team repeated their 1988 triumph by — _ winning all three of their games _ ‘at B.C. finals held at Terrace’s ° Elks Park on July 15 weekend. The: ‘10-to-12-year-olds went up against Comox Valley, Burns ‘Lake and Terrace McDonald’s ina round-robin playdown that — offered fans six games overall. ‘In the opening game, Burns Lake took a 4-0 first-inning lead against Comox Valley and ap- peared to be on the way to a will. But Comox plated three in their half of the first, then added five more in the second to grab a lead they never relinquished. By the final inning of the six-frame game, Comox was up 15-8. They allowed Burns Lake one more run before walking off the field with a 15-9-victory. The Lakers’ Ted Lowley and Valley’s Greg Bono were named game stars for their teams. Bono, his twin brother Gary and Lowley all ‘smashed home runs, Lowley’s was 4 first-inning grand slam. Game two saw Terrace make its first appearance and it wasn’t a good one for the locals, even though they grabbed a 1-0 lead . in the first on Andrew Brown’s home run. , Nanaimo roared back to plate seven and the route was on. The: Islanders added three more in the second and an additional three in the third. After failing to score in the fourth, Nanaimo notched eight more runs in. the’ fifth and wound up on the top end.of a 21-3 score. . os Brown won his team’s MVP award due to: the home run. Steve Nicks was tops for Nanaimo. Game three put ‘Nanaimo back on the field against zone- winning Burns Lake. Nanaimo put this one out of reach with an eight-run fifth inning. The final outcome was 12-3. Jimmy Bailey was the winner’s best player of the game, Mike Bjarnason took the same honor for the Lakers. A five-run fourth inning by Comox Valley enabled them to edge Terrace 7-6 in game four. Terrace had taken a 4-1 lead go- ing into that inning. They added two more in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough. Jamie Martens won the MVP for. Terrace, while Joey Dierickse won for Comox. The last two games turned out to be deciders. In the round-robin, they opened with a tight 5-4 loss to Williams Lake. Then they ran up three straight wins — 9-3 over Mission, 9-3 over Newton, and 5-4 over Kamloops. This moved them into the - semi-finals, where they beat Nanaimo 9-3. Their next game was their worst — a 12-2 loss to Rutland. In Ravens’ last contest, Nanaimo gained revenge by edg-: ing them 5-4.
