THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER AN UNAVOIDABLE TRAGEDY Many fatalities occur in in- dustry because of lack of judgment or human error but from time to time accidents occur in which every precau- tion has been taken and upon investigation defy logical ex- planation. The following ac- count of a fatality in the log- ging industry is a case in point. _ Blasting was being carried out on a road-building proj- ect. Two charges had been fired previous to the one that caused a fatality. Prior to the firing of the third blast, the victim had returned to his pickup which was some 400 feet from the blasting area. Investigation by company per- sonnel, the WCB, RCMP and two Local Union officials, brought out the following points: 2 A surtace rock weigh- ing 37 pounds which was not part of the blasted rock flew through standing timber and went through the windshield of the truck, striking the vic- tim and the door post of the truck with sufficient force to ~* spring the post so that the door flew open. Resultant in- juries were a severely smashed left arm and chest; death was presumed instan- taneous.
