Pa iclory vain a smear .S. astronaut Commander Alan Shepard’s successful flight last Friday marks yet another his- toric milestone in man’s conquest of space. Lobbed into space by a rocket the capsule carrying Shep- ard reached a height of 115-miles, arcing down in the Atlantic some 290 miles from its starting point. at. Cape Canaveral. Maximum speed was estimated at 5,100-mph. After what must have been a nerve-racking experience sitting atop the Redstone rocket for 2% hours before blast-off, Shepard re- turned from his 15-minute flight into space in top condition. Objectively, despite the heavy spate of U.S. coldwar propaganda before and since the U.S. astro- naut’s flight, the Shepard achieve- ment in all its essentials can only be regarded as a very valuable contribution to scientific research in the realm of space conquest. That fact, however, doesn’t seem to meet the requirements of U.S. coldwar super-ego and bomb- ast. U.S. “prestige” was also hitched to the Shepard space cap- sule, hence their need to ‘play- down’ the Russian Yuri Gagarin 109-minute journey orbiting the Earth 23 days before Shepard took his epic 15-minute ride up—and down. In this the U.S. brainwashers are working overtime attempting to ‘prove’ that the Gagarin flight ‘never happened’ and hence the U.S. is “first” as always. The May 1 edition of U.S. News and World Report dedicates two pages on the “mystery” of tha Gagarin flight, designed to estab- lish the idea that it just ‘didn’t happen’, while Ed. Sullivan on his last Sunday TV show told his audience that “America does everything open and above board In Geneva U.S. foreign-secre- tary Dean Rusk won’t talk “peace” untill he is assured a genuine “cease fire” is in effect in Laos. In Laos U.S. imperialism is do- ing its best to see that no such “cease fire” takes place. Authorized as second class mail, Post Office Dept., Ottawa. . . . and the whole world now knows of Alan Shepard’s heroic feat”, whereas in respect to Yuri Gagarin orbiting the Earth, “ have no proof other than Soviet propaganda”? This “great American” brain- washer forgot that the leading scientists of his country had checked and accepted Gagarin’s flight while he was still in orbit. He also forgot that the U-2, Cuba, Allan Dulles’ ‘Project X’ and sun- dry other exploits of U.S. policy fell far short of his “open and above board” caricature of the Shepard achievement. Scientists and historians of this age and of the future will record the names of two youthful and heroic pioneers in reaching out to other worlds in space; Yuri Gag- arin the Russian and Alan Shep- ard the American. On the mighty contribution both made in man’s probing of the universe beyond the realm of Earth; a probing which, in this history-making age the Communist effort dedicates to peace — and U.S. imperialism and its hired propagandists, to the pro- motion of falsehoods, national hat- reds, and war psychosis. A sorry ‘tribute’ to America’s first astro- naut. ” Detition tor su rvival HE petition sponsored by the Canadian Committee for the Control of Radiation Hazards (CCCRH) merits the attention and whole-hearted support of all peace- loving Canadians. Initial signatories launching this petition consist of many promin- ent Canadians; - educationalists, churchmen, journalists and others, deeply concerned with the preser- vation of mankind from the hor- rors of nuclear destruction. Addressed to the government of Canada, the petition declares: “We the undersigned oppose the spread of nuclear weapons to any country or military alliance not now possessing them. We petition the Canadian government to re- ject nuclear weapons for the armed forces of Canada and to prohibit their installation on Canadian soil.” Alarmed at the steadily growing support for such a petition among all sections of the Canadian people who are daily becoming more conscious of the menace of radiation hazards and the stock- piling of these monstrous weapons of mass destruction, there are croaking voices already attempt- ing to utilize the anti-Soviet bogey in order to weaken and ob- struct the purpose and urgency of the CCCRH petition. 4 In its May 4 edition The!) ince asks editorially “ATER nuclear petitions in Russia] answers its own questiol} Yankee imperialism’s store viz: that Western power not strip themselves of “ sive deterrent of the ool their professed enemies 1%) armed to the teeth.” ‘ Were The Province inter) factual journalism it would), that not only are there peay tions in Russia containing ™ p. of signatories for peace. al the banning of nuclear W but Soviet: government pea cies calling for total disat™ and the abolition of war if) forms; peace policies om with the desires of all dating from the Resa pi tion of 1917 down to the ™ ‘| ' cent sessions of the Unilf tions. In tha it commands wide support: i i) Tom McEwen EW York’s “finest” were N swinging their blackjacks in Union Square busting up an alleg- ed “communist” rally. A burly cop with his blackjack poised bore down on one of the audience. ‘Don’t hit me officer’ protested the intended victim, “I’m an anti- Communist”. As he lowered the boom the minion of. “law-and- order” retorted: “I don’t give a good g——d what kind of a Communist you are. Git th’ hell out of here.” The modern coldwar crusader against Communism is much of the. same mental calibre as the New York cop. To the rabid “anti” anything and everything that doesn’t conform, is “communism.” Thus for example, when one of the high priests of ‘Canadian In- telligence” one Ron Gostick re- cently paid a short and somewhat stormy visit to Vancouver, he had the University of British Colum- bia, its president Dr. Norman Mc- Kenzie, Sun columnist Elmore Philpott and sundry other centres and individuals branded as “hot beds of Communism.” Since most of these well-sub- sidized ‘‘antis’’ are viciously anti- ’ Semetic, Gostick unloaded a heavy barrage of literary garbage against the Zionist, B’nai B’rith and other Jewish organizations and leaders. _In the Gostick mentality all who oppose or show ‘concern at the re-arming of West Germany are branded as ‘‘communist.” In the U.S. Time magazine, (March 10), itself no slouch in the art of anti-communist smear, is an article on the “John Birch Society,” an “elite corps’ of anti- commuist propagandists, who as- sume it as their special mission in life to fight “communism.” Thus we learn from Time com- ment on these “John Birch” torch- bearers for fascist ‘reaction. that golfer Ike, a tool of the Communist Party, is guilty of ‘treason’ to America; that “Central Intelli- gence Association” (CIA) boss Al- len Dulles is the “most untouch- able supporter of Communism, next to Eisenhower himself,’ while the late and most decidely un- lamented John Foster Dulles was nothing more than “a Communist agent.” A few days ago in one of his press conferences outlining his government ‘‘policy,’? President Kennedy declared his intention of “saving this system (capitalism) at whatever the cost.” The “Birch” boys and their car- bon copies in similar ‘‘anti’’ organ- izations “pledge” themselves to the same end. At the moment in their crusade against ‘“commun- ism” they are. mounting 4 ‘ campaign in several states for 4 “open-shop-right-to-work” ona of the National Manufact Association in the U.S. and © ada. “Reuther will rule met they tell us, “unless You do 8) thing about it ... your futw threatened, don’t lose everyil you cherish. . don’t let Oe ganized minorities led by the ruin Your country,” etcett so on. i Recently Dief said somethy the same when he “warned” dians that the prime issue i next federal election wou : “socialism” versus “Follow Well, we’ve certainly had 4 of the latter.
