In Argentina, a young boy, on hearing of the arrest of a preg- nant young mother while collect- ing signatures, so intensified his efforts that he has now personally collected 15,200 signatures to the world peace. — hes thirteen-year-old Philip Perrault, whose father was killed fighting fascism in Spain, has now collected 1,850 signatures. In the U.S., Ralph Simmons, a young New York Negro worker, has so far a total of over 2,000. In Norway, Margaret Bergeson of Oslo has collected 1,300 signa- tures to the world peace appeal. L’Humanite reprints a letter from an eleven-year-old Belgian boy who has collected 2,085 signa- tures. ghout the world, including 100 million in the Soviet Union, have petition in this coun- China PEKING Nearly 44 million people in China have signed the Stockholm Appeal, according to a tabulation made by the People’s Daily here. Typical of the response is the Manchurian city of Mukden, where 950,000 people, 60 percent of the city’s population, have signed the peace petition. The People’s Daily writes that the appeal is “not just a simple piece of paper, but the vow of people who are resolved to defend peace, and is the expression of their collective will, When a thought expresses the will of such overwhelming masses of people, it becomes the most powerful ma- terial force, The warmongers are aware of this.” Italy ROME More than 10 million Italians— 700,000 in Rome itself—had sign- ed the world peace petition up to July 15, the Italian National Com- mittee of Partisans of Peace an- nounced recently, Of these signatures, 6,000,000 were collected following U.S. in- tervention in Korea. The campaign is being conduct- ed in a repressive atmosphere cre- ated by a government ban on pub- lic meetings and police persecu- tion of peace partisans. Cuba Collection of signatures to the Stockholm Appeal has reached a total of 445,000 in Cuba, according to the newspaper Hoy. The total population of Cuba is five million, which means that almost 10 per- cent of the population has signed. The campaign is continuing de- spite obstacles set up by the gov- ernment, Recently five young so- cialists were beaten and arrested for collecting signatures in Ha- vana. In other parts of the coun- try, signature collectors and peace propagandists have been arrested and brought before the courts, charged with “subversive propa- ganda” or “agitation against the United States.” India BOMBAY One hundred and fifty political “detainees” in the Nasik central jail in Bombay signed the Stock- holm peace petition on May Day, it was learned here only recently. S. A. Dange, president of the All-India Trades Union Congress, who has since been released, was among the signatories. Signatures were handed over to the jail auth- orities for transmission to the United Nations and to the World.
