Hydro field tests indicate that the oil contained little if any PCB’s. A sample of the oil was to be analyzed in a laboratory late yesterday or early this morning and a conclusive answer to the PCB content, or lack of PCB content, of the oi! is expected later today. Following a receipt of the lab results, says a Ministry of Environment spokesman, if any concern still exists, Terrace residents will be warned through messages on the local radio station. In the meantime, the ministry says it is better to be safe than sorry, and residents on Howe Creek or the Skeena River downstream of Kalum Lake Drive/Howe Creek intersection should treat both water and fish suspect until they are declared safe. B.C. Hydro field operations manager Brian Clarke says the spill occurred at about 10:30 am. Monday when a North Coast Road Maintenance dump truck operating with its box raised snagged a B.C. Telephone line near the entrance to Skeena Sawmills’ log yard and downed two 45-foot hydro poles. He says there were two transformers on each pole, and all four ruptured on impact with the ground. The spilled oil entered Howe Creek through a storm sewer inlet in front of Terrace Steel. According to Clarke, about 30 residences were without electricity for about an hour following the incident. Power to Terrace Steel, however, was not restored for several hours. No cost estimate is available at the present time, but Clarke says the bil] for the repair job will be sent to North Coast Road Maintenance. ANGLING GUIDES AT END OF ROPE — 3 EVERYONE'S BEST FRIEND.
