B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 8, 1995 Pioneer's death mourned ERRACE pioneer William James Christy —_ passed away on December 31, 1994 at the Kitimat Gener- al Hospital in Kitimat, B.C. William James Christy was born on September 20, 1910 in Regina, Saskatoon. He came from a family of seven chil- dren - five girls - Viola, Marion, Lillian, Ethel and Lorna, and two boys, himself and John. His parents were Robert and Elizabeth Christy. In Novernber 1919, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Christy and their seven children arrived in Ter- race. Mr. Christy Sr. had ap- parently received some pamphlets advertising the great fruit farming in the Bums Lake area, So he de- cided to try farming. in. B.C. - He had tried farming in Sas- katoon for about five years, without success, but had no crop. When first in Terrace, Mr. Christy worked in George Litile’s mill. Later, he went to work for George Little and Clair Geggey at Spring Creek and bought ten acres of lanid up on the bench above Lanfear Drive. This was where the children grew up, walking to the old Kalum school for classes. In approximately 1928 or 1929, Mr. Christy bought a house on the corner of Kalum St. and Lazelle Ave, now the Simpson Sears Store in the new Trigo building. And from this location Mr. and Mrs. Christy ran a bake shop. The bake shop was situated in the lean-to, on the side of the house off Kalum St. The couple apparently bought the bake shop from a man ap- propriately named Mr. Baker, The Christy’s ran this bake shop until 1947, when they sold to Mrs. Wagner. And now I must go back to the man whom this. story is | about. Mr. William ames Christy -HERE ‘N THERE... Y VONNE MOEN moved to Terrace with his parents when he was nine years old. At age 11 William started to work part time, just on weekends, at the mill. When he was 13, William Christy left school to work full time. In those days children did not have the opportunity to go onto school for more educa- tion as the children do today. In 1933 William James Christy married his wife, Thelma Seaton, Thelma was the eldest of the Seaton children. The Seaton family had come from the United States. Mr. Seaton was a railroad man and the family later settled in Smithers. Seaton Station, near Hazelton, is named for Mr. Seaton. Thelma attended school in Smithers and later came to Terrace to do housekeeping for a family. It was here that she met William James Christy. The young couple’ were married in Smithers, since her family lived there. Mr. and Mrs, William James Christy had seven children, one daughter Beth, and six boys - Bill, Bob, Jim, John (deceased), Henry and Lorne. In the early days Mr. Christy ran a transport service, hauling _-freight to Kalum Lake for prospectors and homesteaders, _ Later, he went to work for the department of highways. After he left the mill, Mr. Christy went io work for Herb Spencer in the garage in town on Lakelse Ave. Later he returned to work for the de- partment of highways as a Spare operator and mechanic. Mr. Christy then went to work for Columbia Auto. When they first came to town he was their first mechanic, and he worked as their shop foreman until 1960, Mr. Christy then worked for Skeena Forest Praducts as a mechanic until he officially retired at age 65. His wife Thelma passed away in 1975. Mr, Christy later remarried to Jo Twyford, who passed away in 1985, Mr. Christy lived in his home he had built in Thornhill! until he entered Mills Memorial Hospital four years ago. After spending a length of time at Mills Memorial Hospi- tal and six weeks at Ter- raceview Lodge, Mr, Christy then entered the Kitimat Gen- eral Hospital extended care unit. He remained there until his death, New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1994, at age 84 _ years, Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, January 7, 1995, at 1:30 p.m. Father John Smith officiated Name of Volunteer: Nominated by: and pallbearers were Ron Cote, John Jackson, Ron Kuechle, George Kofoed, John Hipp, and Pierre Normandeau. He was buried at the Terrace cemetary. Mr. Christy is survived by daughter Elizabeth Lawrence, sons William, Robert, James, Henry and Lome Christy, and their spouses, plus 23 grand- children and 25 great- grandchildren. He is also sur- vived by three sisters, Viola Giggey, Vane Trinity Hospi- tal, Marion Smith, Victoria, Lillian Brooks, New West- minister, and many friends, Another Terrace pioncer has left us.
