TERRACE — For 18 years Northern Drugs in the Skeena Mali has been | doing business on Sundays peacefully and unobtru- sively. Since last Feb- ruary, however, when Ter- race outlets of major department and grocery stores began opening Sun- days the RCMP have been gathering evidence at Northern Drugs for viola- tions of the B.C. Holiday Shopping Act. Larry Crouse, president of the locally-owned com- pany, said recently the problem appears to lie in the terms of the Act per- . taining to drug stores, terms which He called ‘‘ambiguous’’. Crouse stated he hasn't received any legal advice on: the issue, but he did say that even the police don’t seem ‘certain what is or is not | allowed to be sold in phar- macies on Sundays. “For the time being we've roped off some areas of the store in consultation with the RCMP, and that seems to have satisfied them.”” “We're in the service business,’’ Crouse said. ‘“‘We're open on Sundays to dispense prescriptions “to people who need them, The revenue from pre- scriptions, however, doesn’t support the cost of staying open Sundays.”’ Crouse ‘said he’s been told not to sell small appliances on Sundays; he pointed out, however, that many small neighborhood stores in Terrace have the same items for sale on Sundays and have apparently not attracted police attention. Crouse declared sup- port for unrestricted Sun- day shopping in Terrace, saying, ‘‘It’s imperative. We're trying to develop Terrace as a service com- munity, and if we're going to-do that we have to pro- vide the service.’?
