Delegates attending the Annual Meeting of Local 1-288 IWA (Lumber Inspectors) December 2, in Nanaimo, approved an Executive Board recommendation to hold a referendum ballot for a one month assessment of $5.00 to assist the striking shingle workers in Local 1-217 Van- couver. Other business of the meeting included approving three other Executive Board | recommendations, four resolu- tions, and the Financial and Officers’ Reports. One highly unusual and. praiseworthy resolution called for all Inspectors age 65 or over, to revert to junior In- spectors when there is a cut back in their operation, so as to give the work to the younger members. In approving this resolution the delegates argued that the younger members starting out. | with new families were more in need of the work while those in the 65 age bracket were more financially able to withstand Short periods of unemploy- ment. The Officers’ Report covered the activities of the Local during the past year. The Report noted that the jurisdic- tional problems encountered in the past have now been resolved following agreement with the other coast Local Unions. In reporting on this year’s ie negotiations, the officers stated, “That in the overall ____ negotiations the Inspectors and the Graders and Tallymen came out very well. The fifteen cents adjustment in the hourly rate over and above the in- _ dustry increase and _ the Grading Ticket being made a _ Permanent Certificate, were big gains.” . _ The finances of the Local were reported to be in excel- _ }ent shape. The Report stated _ that the Local’s finances were in far better shape than a year ago and continuing improve- ‘ment was forecast. _ _ Following the meeting, the _members, their wives, friends | guests were treated to a ndid Banquet and Dance. a ttn ny
