uring recent weeks much has happened in Canada 5 and elsewhere throughout the world to thaw the discomforting winds of the coldwar. To mention only two events: the recent visit to Canada of Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin and the final admission of the Peoples Republic of China to its rightful place in the United Nations Organization, coupled with the ousting of the U.S.-puppet regime of Chiang Kai-shek on the Chinese Island of Taiwan (Formosa). Both these events are of momentous significance to world peace and peaceful coexistence, because both show a marked stiffening on the part of official Canada for peaceful and mutually beneficial relations with our northern neighbor, the USSR. The other marks a very definite stiffening of official Canada against being “‘pushed around”’ any longer to suit the economic, political, and/or the conspiratorial war plans of U.S. imperialism, in Asia or elsewhere. Two very historic milestones indeed, indicative of a new awakening of Canada for independence, sovereignty, and leadership in a global struggle for peace. Of course, there were those who “‘surfaced’’ during the visit of Premier Kosygin, the socalled nationalist ‘‘ethnic’’ groups, consisting of Ukrainian, Slavic, Hungarian, Zionist and kindred “‘riff-raff”’;who do not desire to see the coldwar ended, who pressgang their uninformed youth into “‘protest’’ demonstrations, who are joined by other anti-Soviet and anti- Communist hooligan elements such as the ‘Edmund Burke Society”, and whose individual and collective provocations; aimed at violence, assassination and worse, constitute a disgrace to their adopted country, plus a standing menace to peace. Such groupings however are not wholly to blame for their hostile actions. Unfortunately as yet, the coldwar conditioned news media, TV etc., gives them every encouragement; to fan their real or alleged grievances into violent or hostile acts. Perhaps the most contemptible of all these socalled “ethnics” are the Zionist groups who presume to speak for Soviet Jewry and who never miss an opportunity to slander and defile the Soviet government on its alleged “treatment of Jews in the Soviet Union’’. It is not so many years ago since this Zionist lackey of imperialism was fulminating against the Soviet Union for promoting Jewish emigration to Israel, hoping thereby to “‘destroy the Israeli €conomy’’. Now it is just the opposite. Behind the phoney slogan of ‘‘Let My People Go”’, the Zionist provocatures have found a new harassment of Soviet emigration regulations . . . and let it be said, a new way to bring disgrace upon the people of Jewish origin, Soviet or other. Moreover, it is a well-known fact that the leading ~ personnel of this Zionist puppet of Western imperialism, would themselves no more emigrate to Israel than set up in business at the North Pole selling ice cream cones to Eskimos. But they get uninformed dupes to blow their Shofar horns, engage in their ‘‘prayers”’ for Soviet citizens, and participate in their political hooliganism and violence, aided by the openly-fascist Burkite-com-Social Credit would-be assassins. Truly, the old saw of “‘birds of a feather flock together’”’ applies in this instance as it did in the early days of Zionist- Hitler unity, leading eventually to the Hitlerite death ovens for over six million Jewish people. In their class-inspired hatred of the Soviet Union, these Zionist provocateurs forget history — and defile the great people, living and dead, they presume to speak (and ‘‘pray’’) for. : When the representatives of the Peoples Republic of China take their seat (long denied by U.S. imperialism and its dollar- dominated satellites) in the United Nations, a new era will emerge, hopefully an era of peace and understanding between nations and peoples; an era in which the UN can work for peace, freedom from the dollar-domination of a U.S. imperial collossus. And the fate of Taiwan? At the end of World War II the Allied Nations declared Taiwan “‘an integral part of mainland China” together with all other coastal islands in recognized Chinese coastal waters. That declaration was reversed by USS. imperialism, and U.S. puppet Chiang Kai-shek installed on Taiwan, to foment provocation and war upon’ the Peoples Republic of China. In an historic vote the world body of.the UN has reversed that position, and the future is now pregnant with great events— all leading to a lasting peace. war in Vietnam are being held‘in the U.S. and Canada on Satur- End Vietnam war protests to take place November 6 Demonstrations against »the number .of major’ cities across *. Federation of Labor has added its voice to the condemnation of Education Minister Brother’s move to set a six and one half percent limit on teachers salary increases. Secretary Ray Haynes said ““Once again the Bennett government has dangerously undermined collective _ bar- gaining in British Columbia.”’ He said the provincial government should be increasing expenditures on education instead of moving in a retrogressive direction. At a time when pupil-teacher ratios are too high, and with hundreds of qualified teachers unemployed, the government is proving once more just how distorted their priorities are. Wage negotiations.’ are presently underway’. in Vancouver between the school board and teachers. Prior to Brother’s announcement the school board had agreed in principle to pay an 8.9 percent increase. Negotiations have been suspended until the board has an Opportunity to meet with Premier Bennett and the education minister. Donald Brothers has been a consistent financial hatchet man for the Socred government. A few weeks ago he announced the school financing formula would be cut to 108 percent of previous year’s budget instead of the present 110 percent. The move met with strong opposition from teachers, parents, school boards and other groups concerned with education. This new attack on teachers salaries is in line with the Social Credit policy of Port expansion will make jobs Labor must put up a fight for expansion and modernization of port facilities in Vancouver says Andy DeVaal_ of ~ the International Longshoremens’ Union. He told delegates to the Vancouver Labor Council that it would mean employment for hundreds of workers with related benefits in other: areas of the economy. Three major. shipping companies do not make use of the port because of the lack of container facilities, he said. There is only one crane and no back-up area. General cargo sheds are too small and it takes hours for the consignee to find his cargo. He reminded delegates that Transport Minister Jamieson ‘had promised the federal authorities would embark on a massive work program to develop the harbor as long ago as January, 1970. Nothing has been done. Large importers such as Eatons and Woodwards have to use Seattle facilities for a large portion of their imports, he said. Seattle harbor, operated and owned by local authorities spent millions of dollars to modernize and improve their facilities. “We are losing a tremendous number of jobs to Seattle. It is time we determined a policy on this question’’, the longshore worker urged. cutting the quality of education in this province. Vancouver school teachers immediately wired the education minister, labelling his latest move ‘‘a morally wrong attempt to tamper with and influence the teacher salary bargaining process set out in the Public Schools Act.”’ They warned further that his interference in school board- teacher bargaining threatens not only the position of teachers but of everyone who comes under the Labor Relations Act. PACIFIC TRIBUNE Fire tragedy for low rental housing — By ALD. HARRY RANKIN Five more people have died as a result of a fire ina Vancouver . Skid Road rooming house, this time in the Skyline Hotel adjacent to the -police station. Reports indicate that the fire alarm in the building failed to function, the hallways had no- directional signals pointing to escape routes, and fire doors which should have been closed had been wedged open. * Fire Chief, Armand Konig has announced that he will appear before City Council to ask for more stringent fire safety bylaws. * ; This is not the first such tragedy. Each time one occurs it is decided that safety laws should be more stringent and the regulations enforced with greater strictness. But the fatal fires haven’t stopped. Why? One reason undoubtedly is that fire safety laws haven’t been enforced in the slum areas of the city. A double standard appears to operate. Another reason is that the regulations are difficult to enforce on old run-down buildings. What can. you do, for example, with.a 75 year old wooden frame building? No matter what you do to it, it will still be a fire trap.
