~ POTTERS an COLUMBIA a Free e-books @ Surrey Art Gallery By Liane Davison An Open Book is a catalogue of publications about artworks in the Surrey Art Gallery's permanent collection. The Surrey Art Gallery has commissioned writers to produce brief essays about specific artworks, putting them in relation to the artist's biography and the history of their practice. Many of the publications also include statements written by the artists. The intention of An Open Book is to make information on the wonderful artworks in the Gallery's collection easily available to the public. Readers are invited to dip into any part of the collection, and to come back often, as more publications are produced. In the area of ceramics, the collections includes Sally Michener, Bill Rennie and Judy Chartrand. The publications are available as PDF files. As a visual artist and current student at Emily Carr University, I couldn't have asked for a more ideal and inspirational place of work. Each day that I walk into “work” I know that I will leave with new knowledge of all aspects of ceramics from technical glaze information to new facts about a particular artist. Having the opportunity to be exposed to so many different styles and processes provides me with endless learning opportunities. As a young emerging artist it is so important to keep obtaining this knowledge by asking questions and learning from those who inspire me and have been practicing for years. All these artists are incredibly talented and have so much k nowledge to share with those who want to learn, so why not go out and see how they create, what inspires them and how they got to where they are today? ‘This past month I got in contact with Karel Peeters and asked him if I could come see his studio (located in the Kootenay/Boundary Area of the interior) and ask some questions Specialty Courses & Workshops at the Surrey Art Gallery Pottery - Open Studio For this non-instructional studio time, you must have taken at least one ceramics studio class at the Surrey Art Gallery, and feel comfortable working on your own. ABOVE: Karisa and Karel in the spray booth. about his processes and glazing techniques. I have always been drawn to the brilliant colors of his work, as that kind of color intensity is not often seen within ceramic glaze surfaces. As someone who loves to experiment with glaze recipes, I wanted to learn anything that I could about his work. I was fortunate to receive a studio tour, a throwing demon- stration and a glazing demonstration! He was so enthusiastic and informative and gladly answered any questions that I had. I was incredibly thankful for his willingness to share his years of experience and knowledge with me. What more can you ask for than being able to create beautiful pottery in a place as beautiful as the Kootenays! Seeing the studio set up and how an artist works within that space is extremely helpful and it is these curiosities, questions and journeys that I will take with me as I continue to pursue my own artistic journey.
