Police bust | break-in RCMP OFFICERS arrested and charged six local youths with possession of stolen property April 13 after a string of automobile robberies here. An 18-year-old man, 21-year-old, woman and four young offenders aged 12 to 14, are scheduled to appear in court next month. RCMP officer Cnst. Gary Swanson said they stole everything from Canadian Tire money and loase change to wallets and clothing, -“There’s no thyme or reason to it,” Swanson said. Swanson was driving a fellow officer home al 6:30 a.m. Sunday, April 11 when he noticed four youths wearing back packs near the corner of Eby and Davis in Terrace. He said they looked suspicious because it’s unusual for youth that young to be out in groups early in the morning. Officers later searched a home on Tuck Avenue and seized property they believe was taken from local vehicles in the first two weeks of April. Mote property was recovered than has been reported missing to the RCMP and offi- cers are now asking the public to report thefts so property can be returned and appro- priate charges can be laid. The youths helped themselves to vehi- Wait lists short here bandits cles through unlocked doors. But they also smashed side windows and punched door locks to gain entry — triggering a rash of claims at the local ICBC office, Local claims manager Don Taylor says they’ve had at least eight reported claims in the last two weeks. Five of those were smashed side win- dows, one was a rear window of a hatch back, one pried door latch and one forced entry through a back canopy. Four of the reported vehicles were cars, Taylor said, but three trucks and a 1974 Pontiac van were also damaged. He said that most of the smash and grabs happened April 11-13 on Sparks, Krumm, Kenny and Cramer Streets in Terrace and Thornhill. Just two weeks ago Cnst. Kurt Grabinsky urged drivers to park in well-lit or visible areas, close all windows and lock their doors after three or more break-ins were reported in one day. He said thieves can be deterred by taking valuables and spare keys out of the car, hid- ing loose change and installing an anti-theft device or car alarm. Marking stereo or radio equipment with a driver’s licence or licence plate number and keeping a list of accessories in the car can also prevent crime, Grabinsky said. How are we doing? Paseo du Canada LOCAL HEALTH care officials aren’t sure how much local benefit there’ll be from money the provincial government is commit- ting to reduce wait lists, As il is, they say wait lists for elective, non-emergency surgical procedures con- ducted at Mills Memorial Hospital already rank among the lowest in B.C. “From what we’re told by the ministry (of health), we’re in pretty good shape,” said Terrace and Area Health Council chair Larisa Tarwick. “If it can be done here, it can be done much faster than elsewhere in the province.” She was also reacting to a health minis- try plan to publish the wait lists of surgeons and to make it available on the Internet. It wants to give doctors and their patients who need surgery access to informa- tion that could allow them to choose to book a procedure with someone who has a short wait list. This ability, tied with money to reduce wail lists, form a cornerstone to bettering health care services this year. Neither Tarwick or Tom Novak, the man brought in to manage the health council’s facilities, are convinced that people from outside the area will come to Mills simply because it may have a shorter wait list for some surgical procedures. “Most people don’t want to travel too far from home if they can help it for surgery,” said Tarwick. “And people are more comfortable in their home environment,” she added. Novak said people might come here from farther away would do so only after balancing off what they would pain against costs of travel and accommodation. “Some people will shop around, it will depend upon a lot of factors, perhaps an employment situation,’ he said. There’s no immediate word yet on when hospitals will hear about the money they’Il receive to reduce wait lists. Hospitals in smaller centres tend to have shorter surgical wait lists than hospitals in bigger cities simply because of the sheer number of people who live in more popu- lated areas. And people from small areas may sim- ply prefer to have their-procedures done-at. bigger hospitals even though they can ‘be undertaken at their local facility. kkk kk Although local health care officials say the waiting lists here are low, a set of statis- tics for wait lists across the province indi- cates otherwise, depending upon the surgical procedure, The area’s two general surgeons are now booking procedures for June, says informa- tion from Mills Memorial. But the provincial wait for general sur- gery is 3.4 weeks as of January, according to the Central Vancouver Island Regional Health Board which says it got the informa- tion from the health ministry, For ophthalmology, the local waiting list extends into June, which is close to the pro- vincial figure of eight weeks. Urology procedures are now being bocked for late May compared to a provin- cial wait rate of 2.7 weeks.
