These men get a bad break

Dear Sir:

We again read and hear about the horror of an
ex-husband/boyfriend Killing another woman,

Maybe it’s time that the media let the people
know whit could he happening behind the
scenes. Maybe our politicians should stand up
and take notice of what is happening out there.

All these men are not ‘labeled kiflers? [am
sure. Maybe our system has let a few good men
down,

The Family Maintenance Enforcement Act,
which was put into effect for the Purpose of
bringing to justice the absconding fathers skip-
ping out on child support has also completely

_ mined a lot of good men and good fathers,

Lel’s have a look at what may drive a man to
finally murder and taking his own life.

There are a lot of wives of good men who are
not as good as the painted picture we see. They
are bored wives and mothers who are into drug
and alcohol abuse with boyfriends on the side.
When the marriage finally falls apart the hard
working husbands and fathers who have pro-
vided for their family are sucked down the drain
by the Iegal system.

These men who must hire lawyers (the wife
can go to legal aid at no cost to her) are ordered
to pay child support and maintenance payments
for the wife — most limes a ridiculously large
amount of money for an ex-wife who is fully
capable and able to support herself,

This goad husband and father docs not have a
chance to get on with his life and is left most
times with little or nothing to support himself.

The law also gives the woman the right to go
back to her legal aid lawyers and demand in-
creases in maintenance payments years after the
divorce has been finalized.

This law is not fair to these fellow men. When
a system such as ours pulls a good man down

the drain and he has no way out, the human
mind and body can only take so much.

Why are these good men ordered to suppart
nat so good women?

May the family maintegance law be used for
the purpose it was made for - absconding fa-
thers who must be held responsible for their
children. But they should not be held
responsible to support another adult who is
capable or supportirg themselves.

Let’s get out to the public the fact behind the
facts and the truth about a system that is making
the lawyers rich and dragging many good men
down the drain, These men may not have the
Stamina to hold up under the legal abuse and we
end up reading about - yes, another murder of a
poor ex-wife,

I wonder if the murders will increase in 1997
when the law says ex-husbands can no longer
use their support payments as a deduction when
filing their income tax retums — and the cx
wife docs not have to claim the maintenance
payments as an income,

Dear Sir:

In response to Barb Burrill’s letter of May
29 ‘Where is my puppy??’. Ms, Burill
blames a speeding driver for killing ber
dog.

Perhaps she should blame herself for not
having the dog on a $10 leash, I am assum-
ing that she like so many other dog lovers,
lets her animals run Joose.

Tam not a particularly fast driver, but I do
~ my share of slamming on the brakes to
avoid hitting or maiming the pets people
supposedly love so dearly.

While we are on the topic. ] must mention
the numerous canine feccs deposits around
my yard that my children track in to my
house; the new fence around our garden to
save it from further canine destruction and
my general disgust when I see a dog licking

my kid’s face or hands only moments after
licking something unmentionable. We
Shoulda’t forget having to listen to nightly
and early morning neighborhood barking
contests. And how about our peaceful walk
when the dogs bark at us and accasionally
try to bite us?

Speeding is dangerous but il’s not the
cause of your dog’s death. I hope you have
learned a lesson and that you will tether
your next dog to a leash as 1 truly wish ]
would have done when J lost my dog of
three years loa car’s bumper.

I was 14 years old when that happened
and never did I consider blaming the car’s
driver. I realized my mistake in letting
Radar runas he pleased,

Reform voter stands firm

Dear Sir:

In reply to Rick Wozney’s comments.
Mr. Wozney stated that the Reform party
had spoiled the chance for free enterprise in
Skeena.

He seemed to assume that in the absence
of a Reform candidate, all would flock to

Why the hole
after paving?

Dear Sir:

I have been utterly disgusted with the City of
Terrace this spring. Every year we see the crews
out fixing potholes in the city streets. This year
they’ve been repaving some streets which is good,

They spent weeks getting Kalum St. South ready
for paving. They spent days rolling the new bed to
make sure it was packed enough for the new
paving. On Monday May 6 they finally paved.
What a glorious day,

On Wednesday, May 8, the city came along and
dug a hole in the brand new paving al the corner
of Kalum and Keith. Don’t ask me what for.

The fellow was jumping in the hole as they put
the gravel back like he could pack it down like the
rollers can. They finished what they were doing
and repaved the hole. You guessed it. We have a
pothole in pavement that is less than one month

old.

I can’t figure out why the city had to wait till the
paving was all done, Why could they not have
done whatever it was they did earlier? It seemed
such a shame to destroy new pavement.

Will they have to do this to every street that they
are repaving this year? In the meantime, guys,
there’s a pothole at Kalum and Keith to fix, Why
wait till next spring?
