Spit ’n polish. Shining brass and
ironing clothes. What teenager
today is going to put up with that
kind of a routine week after week?
The answer is: "Quite a few."
There are more than three dozen
young men and women who
belong to Terrace 747 Squadron
Air Cadets and more are expected
to join. Why? Look what they
have to offer.

You can learn to fly in the squa-
dron owned L-233 Schweitzer
glider or Piper Super Cub single-
engine aircraft. You can learn
. leadership skills, survival, first aid
and how to handle a rifle. And you
can take part in basic training,
things like drill and navigation,
that give you things hard to find
anywhere else; self-discipline,

self-confidence and self-worth. Air

Cadets have a lot to offer young
people, and there’s more.

Every year a number of cadets
are selected to attend summer
camps in various Canadian military
locations for junior and senior
leadership training, air crew surv-
ival, lifeguard and scuba diving
lessons, aeronautical studies, air
traffic control and a chance at
some flying and gliding scholars-
hips.

For those who excel in both
school and squadron activities the
opportunities are even greater.
There are international exchange
courses available in countries like
Sweden, Germany, Great Britain
and Japan.

If you like competition under
pressure, try joining the squadron’s
First Aid Team. In 1986, the Ter-
race 747 team not only placed
first, but did it with the greatest
margin of points ever recorded

between first and second place and
won top honours for team capiain
as well. This year’s team placed
ninth in that same competition but
most of the team was new. Next
year, it will be a lot different.
But there’s something for every-
one too. Annual squadron exer-
cises include drill and range comp-
etitions, sporls weekends, camp-

outs and other inter-community .

activities. The squadron also

makes it a practice to attend points

of interest on an annual basis. One
year it was the Boeing plant in

gram, is proving very popular
with the artists of Terrace. Ar-
tists are gearing up to enter their
very best to compete for the
$1,500 prize money available.
Northwest Alcohol and Drugs
Services is looking for a poster
to be used by their regional of-
fices. The poster is to depict a
positive message for responsible
substance use, have a strong
visual impact, and be appropri-

ate for. use in northwestern
British Columbia.

Submissions must be accom-
panied by a photograph and col-
or negative. Any size photo i is

The contest is open to
residents of Terrace, Kitimat,
Smithers, Prince Rupert and
surrounding districts.
