Five-year plan announced for B.C. swimmers The B.C. World Swim Challenge, which will take a team of several thousand B.C. aquatic athletes of all ages from all over British Columbia on a symbolic swim to the 1988 . Olympic Games in Seoul, on to the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and back home to British Columbia, has been an- nounced by Swim B.C. - This year is phase I in a 5-year program of unique co-operative effort on behalf of British Col- umbia Aquatics. It will cover a total distance of 26,440 kilometers. It will be completed | _by athletes in the Olympic sports of swim racing, water polo, div- ing and synchronized swimming "as well as by members of Sum- mer swimming and Masters swimming. a .. Each swimmer will log the ‘training distance completed dur- ing the designated week of May 20 to June 4. The personal goal for each participant will be to complete a minimum of 6,250 - meters for that week (250 x 25 | meters). .. The purpose of this “Challenge Swim” is to raise $300,000 for aquatic develop- ment in the province. $100,000 will be set aside for an air- supported structure to cover the outdoor 1954 Empire and Com- ‘monwealth Games Pool at the University of British Columbia from September to May each season. A Swim B.C. Provincial Development Centre will be established there. It will be available for all aquatic disciplines for training and skill development camps, and for regional team and provincial team training. It will offer B.C. aquatics a home of their own for the very first time and goes a long way towards helping highly motivated British Columbia aquatic athletes” achieve “their with a two-win, dreams and desires. Self-help of $150,000 will flow back to the various: club development programs all over the province, and attractive in- centives will also be offered to the athletes and the sponsors. Contributors will receive a $4 annual membership in Swim B.C., along with an automatic chance for an exciting draw for two tickets anywhere in Cana- dian Airlines’ -world and other prizes. The Challenge draw will take place July 10 at the Van- couver Aquatic Centre during the B.C. Age-Group Swimming Championships.
