10 . Terrace Review — Wednesday, April2, 1986 Letters to the Editor Encouraged by support To the editor, I’d like to begin by thanking you for the balanced coverage that you have given the RCMP building tender question. I would, however, like to add a few comments for clarification. To begin on a positive note, we are very pleased that Council is considering a “Fair Wage Bylaw’’. We support a Vancouver- style bylaw that specifies that contractors must pay at least the equivalent to municipal wage and benefit rates. We also have good reason to expect support on Council for this posi- tion. However, please do not misunderstand. We strongly believe that the Council decision to award Hegge the RCMP contract was wrong. We doubt that the problem would exist had the tender documents not been changed, Over the past two years, we have met On numerous occa- sions with Council to press our case for fair wages. The specification was in the documents but apparently removed without Council’s knowledge. Had it not been removed, we are convinced that Council would now be talking with a local contractor about cutting costs. Kitimat recently follow- ed this route and sup- posedly found savings of $86,000 on a smaller building. We are very encour- aged by the broad com- munity support for our position on this matter. It appears that there is a recognition that if con- struction services can be purchased from out of the region on a strictly low bid basis, other goods and services could Research might help resolve problem To the editor, I'd like to respond to the lettets from Mark Ruelle and Tom Brophy in the Terrace Review on March 19. It seems any time that the anti-choice people write about abortion, they tend to fail to men- tion birth control as a related issue. Abortion, in my opinion, is only necessary aS an option for women because 100 percent safe and effec- tive birth control does not exist. Women, in most cases, do not use abortion as a form of birth control; but rather because their birth con- trol method has failed. Young women are often not offered reliable in- formation about birth control practices so that they can safely avoid pregnancy. Frances Birdsell, Terrace, B.C. ~ AUTO- PLAN REMINDER follow. Workers, and a segment of the business types, support fair wages and understand that tax dollars should remain in the community. For the information of the many people who have asked about our next move, we have ar- ranged to meet with Hegge. We will continue to defend the right of Terrace residents to jobs and fair wages on a pro- ject that they fund. It isa responsibility that we ac- cept. It is unfortunate that we must. It is a responsibility that in my opinion was abdicated by Council when they re- jected negotiations with a local contractor and chose to hire an out-of- town employer. Paul Johnston - Secretary North Coast Building Trades OnandOff Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have identi- fied for the firse time a protein responsible for triggering a gene to turn on and off during develop- ment. The finding reveals another plece in biclogy's biggest puzzle: what directs different genes to turn on at different times and sites within the body. The result of this molecular “decision” makes all the differ- ence—-bload cells instead of brain cells, for example, or eyes instead of legs. Inthe past few years molecular biologists have scrutinized vari- ous ‘control’ signals in DNA, the code-bearing molecular, that somehow enable nearby genes to order copies of themselves—the first crucial step in regulating all life processes. {_ | 2 2 Bil = Leisu tions ment value after Special Unilke motorhomes, vans ara insured for their actual cash original manufacturer is not in- cluded in the baslc coverage.
