_ Colleges sign deal
- to span the Pacific

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY College has
~ signed’ an agreement with a Chinese post
“secondary institution opening the doors for
_ faculty, student and other exchanges.

to the-Northwest.

“This agreement enables both institutions
- to enhance the educational opportunities for

- our respective students, businesses and the

~ communities we serve, as well as enhancing -

_ professional development, opportunities for
” college employees,” says NWCC president
. Stephanie Forsyth.

- “There is much we can learn from each

_ guage and cultural differences.”

Forsyth, signed the agreement with Qing-
~ dao president Shi who was accompanied on

“the Northwest week-long visit by vice-pro-.

._ fessor Wang and interpreter Mr. Sun.
~ Their tour began i in Prince Rupert, where

they. visited NWCC’s new campus, partici-
pated in short workshops about various as- |

pects of the college, and met with college

staff, members of the community, as well as -

local government officials.
- They then travelled to Terrace, meeting

with faculty and administration here and the ~

~ Hazeltons where they took in Ksan.
“Everywhere they went, our guests were

treated with warm welcomes and wonderful ,

hospitality. They were very impressed with
the Northwest; the college and the incredible
beauty of the region,” states Forsyth.

“The trip here followed one made to China

_by Forsyth in the fall, where she first met the |

Qingdao officials and visited their campus.
Striking an agreement with Qingdao con-
tinues NWCC’s efforts at overseas connec-

tions. This June, it was awarded a four-year, .

$400,000 grant to deal with: rural develop-

ment issues in Bolivia. The college has also

played host toa dozen or more foreign stu-
. dents a year.

Ex -MLA‘takes on new role
as head of local Liberals:

- taking over from Brian Downie, who was
running for city council. -
