TRANSPORTATION Our transportation systems contribute greatly to the pollution of our region. Oil from our cars, trucks, buses, boats and homes is washed into storm drains and ends up in Georgia Strait, along with used motor oil poured down drains or onto the soil. Pollutants from motor vehicles return with the rain, falling on land and sea. The burning of fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide (the major greenhouse gas), and the world’s oil supply will run out within 40 to 60 years. Therefore, a shift to ecologicaily-sustainable methods of transportation is urgently needed.
