Town founder had faith

The town took in just
$1,600 in taxes that first
year, (compared to be-
tween $13-14 million
today), so it had to borrow
$300, Talstra noted.

Terrace was originally a
Sawmill town that pro-
duced lumber far stern-
wheelers, then the main
mode of transportation in
the region.

Despite the arrival of
the railway here in 1914,
Terrace continued to take
a back seat to the bustling
port: communities on the
north coast, evolving into
a sleepy ‘farming commun-
ity that only really began
to thrive with the advent of
the aluminum smelter at
Alcan and the Kitimat
townsite in the mid-1950s.

“That was the time that
we really started to grow,”
Talstra said, stressing the
importance of the relation-
ship between Terrace, Ki-
timat and Prince Rupert.

aboriginal communities.

their neighbours and shar-
ing this valley with them.”

from the Tsimshian nation
was on hand at the cerem-
ony.

George Clark explained
both Diane Collins, chief
councillor of Kitsumkalum
and Nisga’a Lisims Presi-
dent Joe Gosnell, who was
also on the list of dignitar-
ies, were unexpectedly
forced to cancel plans to
speak at the ceremony.

Edna Cooper, a former
school board chairman and
Order of B.C. recipient,
praised Terrace’s pioneer
famities for their vision
and faith in the town’s po-
tential.
