-B8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 10, 2001 Local man’s photographs featured in CN calendar TERRACITE PAT Gorman is a conductor for CN Rail. He’s also been an amateur . photographer for nearly 30 years. Three of his photos have recently been pub- lished in CN’s employee calendar for 2001. The calendar features photographs taken from ail over North America by CN employees. Graham Dallas, public relations officer for the railroad says the photogra- phy competition began to bolster “a stronger bond between our employees.” With 22,000 employees from Prince Rupert to New Brunswick and as far south as New Orleans, the rail- road weaves its way through a diversity of terrain. “It shows the varying terrain and operating condi- tions,” he said. One of Gorman’s winning entries was taken at Exstew neat Terrace just after the record breaking snowfall in 1999, The photograph shows a train muscling its way through a lot of heavy snow. A few parked train cars on the track next to it are buried under at least five feet of the white stuff. “There was so much snow that there wasn't a safe place to park on the highway but a front end loader hap- pened to be clearing a section so I was lucky,” he said. Another picture shows a train engine emerging out of a dark tunnel into lush greenery and striking rock forma- tions — a scene typical in this part of Canada, “That picture was taken at Kitselas Canyon, just west of Usk where there is a series of four tunnels,” says Gor- man. “My job is travelling on the trains, so ] get an oppor- tunity to think about photo possibilities when I’m going from point to point,” said Gorman. How does he feel about having his photos in print? “It’s nice,” says Gorman. “I enjoy anticipating the competition. it’s a good way to get outside and it’s something to shoot for every year,” he said This is the fourth year that Gorman’s photos have been chosen for the CN calendar. ; Pat Gorman From B2 a | Community Calendar Terrace Nights Alive for youth 13-18 years.
