Nisga’a artists at
festival in Turkey

A SMALL group of
Nisga’a artists recently left
their mark on Turkey.

The troupe, made up of
one carver and three dan-
cers, was chosen to
represent Canada at the
Bursa International Tulip
Festival held in the Republic
of Turkey May 1 to 3.

“We stole the show," says
Peter Baird, manager of
public information and con-
sultation at the Federal
Treaty Negotiation Office in
Vancouver.

Baird says he was quick to
suggest the Nisga’a alter

carver Alver Tait.

They travelled to the festi-
val, which was attended by
over 100,000 people, with
artifacts from the new book,
Bringing Our Ancestors
Home. The artifacts will be
repatriated as part of the
new treaty.

Japan and the Netherlands
were also invited to the fes-
tival. “I don’t think, in fair-
ness to the Netherlands and
Japan, that they could have

had anything that could
have matched uws,’’ says
Baird.
