Multicultural Society helps foreigners feel at home TERRACE — The Multi- cultural Society has in the past done many activities to promote the integration of foreign peoples into the Canadian society without sacrificing family tradi- tions. The group’s main goal is to make both Canadians and immi- grants comfortable around one another. by Philip Musselman The group was formed three years ago, and is af- filiated with the Affilia- tion of Multicultural Societies and Services Agencies. The founder of the Terrace Multicultural Society is Cathy Mueller who organized a member- ship of 30 to 40 people who wished to promote the rights and importance of landed immigrants. The first formal, general meeting drew a collection of ‘40 interested people and the membership has been bouncing up and down since then, Some people move away and - others are just coming to the community. “It is important to say, with pride, ‘I’m.a Cana- dian’,’’ commented Silvia Morales, vice-president of the group. Morales is originally from Chile, South America. The Multicultural Society aids individuals in becoming fully participating citi- zens, in order to ensure their contribution to the country. It is important to the group that anyone coming for help can be taught the responsibilities of living in Canada. Another important fac- tor includes the introduc- tion of these other peoples’ traditions to Canadians. This is done through the promotion of togetherness of different groups. Immigrants must be taught to speak English, or chances are that getting a job will be next to impossible. ‘‘We find that almost everyone coming to our. area wants to learn English,’’ abera. rae” Deane wes ‘Betty Barton and Siivia ‘Morales, Publicity Representative and Vice President of the Terrace Multicultural Society, welcome one and all to the Dec. 7 potluck supper at the Arena Banquet Room. Tickets are $1.00 at the door. Morales stated,‘‘we point out the services that help people learn the language.’” The group is presently working on coordinating an E.S.L. (English as a Second Language) pro- gram with the Northwest Community College. Ac- cording to Betty Barton, Publicity Coordinator, the Multicultural Society is a group for everyone, from those who are just in- terested in learning about other countries to those who are looking for an op- portunity to learn more about Canada. ‘‘The im- Wednesday is SHIRT DAY Men’s or Ladies’ cotton blend dress or We We clean wilh ea : Whatever you wear » Ks | i) Rickards Cleaners 3223 Emerson St. portant thing is that we all work together’’, Barton said.
