Wedvenday, Mari 26. 1986 | hte - a : Obstetricians approve — lower cesarean rate | every five (20 percent) babies in Canada is born via this major surgical procedure. The rate rose 200 percent between 1970 and 1983 and is the third-most frequent Operation done to women. The document approv- ed by SOGC makes a trial of labor and normal birth after one previous cesarean the recom- mended mode of delivery. It states that any hospital which is prepared to accept the responsibility of emergency measures for other obstetric emergen- cies (cord prolapse, hem- morhage, fetal distress), can handle a trial of labor. Most hospitals in B.C. would meet these criteria. The rate of serious complications from a trial of labor is about one tenth of those from other emergency situations, Other recommenda- tions include a normal birth for breech presen- tation, mandatory use of informed consent, guidelines for difficult labor and future research into areas such as train- ing and multiple previous sections. Informed consent is the single-most impor- tant factor, was the ad- vice of the panel. This means that every woman must be given informa- tion on risks and benefits of both cesarean section You'll Get The Picture With The Savings You'll Snap Up in The Classifieds and normal delivery and that documentation of this must be done. “Adequate informa- tion should be provided so that an informed deci- sion between elective repeat cesarean and trial of labor can be reached by the woman. Every ef- fori should be made to accommodate this deci- Sion’’, reads the Final Report. Review of available medical literature led the panel to conclude that trial of labor is as safe as a repeat cesarean.
