This rise increases the inflationary pace higher than 1973 and is the highest in over 22 years. The latest rise pushes living costs up 10.4 percent in the- past year, higher than the 9.1 percent rise in the previous year which set a post-war record. Indications are that 1974 will be the worst year since the end of Wrold War II. The March rise pushes the over-all cost of living index up to 160.8. The index is based on 1961 prices equalling 100. The latest blow against living costs was the announcement last week that the Bank of Canada had increased its bank rate on loans by one point to a record 8.25 per cent. This decision was made by the federal government. This rate is charged to other banks who borrow from the Bank of Canada. Monday Canadian banks followed with an immediate prime-rate increase to 10 or 10.5 percent. The rate on consumer loans will be pushed up to a record 12.5 percent. The direct effectiof this will be a sharp rise in the cost of living. Particularly hard hit will be housing. The Coordinating Committee to Roll Back Prices in Vancouver has condemned the latest increases and called for stepped up action around the committee’s petition. A few thousand names have already been collected. The petition calls for a roll back in prices and for prosecution of the profiteers. (See petition form below). Supporters of the committee are taking to the streets in Vancouver Saturday, April 20 and will con- centrate petitioning at the Safeway store at Knight Road and Kingsway. This will be the opening gun in the campaign to take the petition to the public. A national petition day has been set for Saturday, May 4, at which time every major population centre in Canada will be involved. Extensive preparations are going ahead in B.C. for a major effort on that day. In Vancouver petitioning will be between 10 to 12. a.m. and from 12 to 2 p.m. and will concentrate in the downtown area at Woodwards Store, Abbott and Hastings, and the Pacific Centre, Granville and Georgia. Petitioning will also take place in other major B.C. centres. For information and -petition forms phone Sue Radosevic at 291-0144 or write Coordinating Committee to. Roll Back Prices, P.O. Box 65594, Station F, Vancouver. The petition campaign has been endorsed by the Vancouver Labor Council, the ~ B.C.
