a ‘surprise’

A BC TEL official says the company is surprised it was

charged as 2 result of a 1997 diesel spill at Meziadin Lake.

Company spokesman Ed Clark said B.C. has such high
standards for all of its province-wide radio repeater sites

Ahat it has won awards for environmental safety.

Clark acknowledged that the 4,000 litre spill, the result
‘of a crack in an oil-water separator ring, was a case ‘of
faulty equipment.

The leak, which happened between Aug. 25 and Sept. 12,
1997, was discovered Sept. 12. BC Tel and government
represenlatives went to ihe location Sept. 13 to investigate.
- Two days later the provincial environment ministry. or-
dered an assessment and BC Tel started excavating about
200 cubic metres of contaminated soil.

The province is charging BC Tel with one count of intro-
ducing waste into the environment under the Waste Man-
agement Act. BC Tel could face a $1 million penalty.
Company lawyers made a first appearance in Smithers
court Monday.

Wayne Campbell, the investigating conservation officer,
said the charge |s based on the leak itself and not how well
or how fast BC Tel was involved in the clean up.

Rob Melvin, a Department of Fisheries and Oceans rep-
resentative in New Aiyansh, said no damage was done to
salmon stocks. Melvin said BC Tel first noticed the spill
when ‘an alarm went off signalling a diesel tank had
emptied, but that environmental damage was minimized
due to an interception trench dug by BC Tel.

The minisiry and BC: Tel also seem to disagree about
removal procedures for diesel still located under the hut
which contains the generator providing power to the
repeater station. Derrick Lowe, a B.C. environmental
safety officer, said the ministry will decide whether the hut

needs to be removed completely in order to treat the.soil —

underneath it in upcoming months.
BC Tel representatives were not aware any more cleanup
was required.
